My 2 cents worth- stick with plasma- I've got a 65" Panasonic plasma on the wall and it's great. I find all LED based technology looks too bright and sharp in comparison and very 'fake' somehow... UHD does seem a bit faddish still as well
I have a TH-P55VT60 Panasonic plasma, if it were to be replaced tomorrow, I'd buy the 55" LG OLED. If I wanted a UHD panel around 65"... it would be a Panasonic TH-65AX800z. Flat, UHD, display port, HDMI 2 etc - it's the best UHD option at this point. Oh yeah, the picture is good too.
i definitely saw a difference in UHD versus regular screens. The UHD did a much better job of the content.
there was also a big difference in the OLED versus LCD - especially in the blacks. backlit/edgelit LCD does poor job on black compared to plasma or OLED
id I had $4500-$5500 to spend, i'd wait and buy a 4K OLED. The US 65" OLED UHD TV is US$9999 right now, that's sure to halve by the end of the year ;)
Now, one reason I'm in Vegas is to look at Samsung's offerings for 2015. The Korean electronics giant believes it has the chicken-and-egg problem with 4K TVs sussed out, so that people will start buying sets in larger numbers.
As part of that effort, Samsung has joined forces with Japanese competitors Sony, Panasonic and Sharp along with movie studios to hammer out standards for Ultra High Definition or UHD content.
This is a bit surprising really, but before the UHD Alliance, there doesn't appear to have been industry-wide agreement on high colour gamut for more realistic images as well as high frame rates and immersive sound.
Working with the content producers and distributors - especially Netflix which is hugely popular - makes sense for Samsung and the others.
Apart from the high prices for 4K TVs, the lack of content meant the hi-res standard has been slow to take off.
Let's see if the UHD Alliance will help make more content available for 4K fans, and if it'll help with 8K content as we should see the even-higher resolution screens appearing this year.

I think all the views expressed here are pretty valid, depending on your use-cases and the length of time you expect to own the TV.
For myself I like the curved displays, the reduction in reflectance is nice in our home where the only place to situate a TV in the lounge is the wall opposite most of the lounge windows.
If I were buying right now I'd certainly be getting a 4K display, but that's mostly because I do most of my PC gaming with my desktop rig connected to the TV and I can actually use 4K there (for Dolphin Wii/Gamecube emulation and PC games via the GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0, not to mention mirroring the 4K content I shoot myself). In the case of gaming I sit close enough to make the extra pixels worth it, and again I like the curved displays for that also. Should also mention for gaming applications and my general TV watching I'm not particularly fussy about colour accuracy/178 degree viewing angles and so forth, so I can forgive 4K displays with panel qualities that are outdone by 1080p panels (resolution aside, obviously).
For most people I wouldn't recommend a curved display or 4K right now though, and I'd be looking to wait a bit longer for newer models incoming. If I didn't have particular reasons for wanting 4K at this point in time, and I were buying right now, and felt like I really needed to buy right now, with that budget I'd probably be looking at the OLED panel several have mentioned.
We don't have any gaming devices really - I have a couple of games on my iMac (quite fond of Hitman Absolution but only in hopelessly easy mode otherwise too frustrating) and on my iPhone but that is it.
