nathan: nah you need to pay 10x the price for a monster cable as they make those digital 1s and 0s move along the copper better ;)

plus a genuine monster will have better build quality and better quality plugs that will not deteriorate over time.

I've got a cheapy 2m tm cable that ended up with a broken plug due to the weight of the cable.

Nothing a bit of sellotape can't fix! And still be 9.99x cheaper than the monster cable ;-)

If you ever see me using sellotape to hold together my system - shoot me, as I've clearly lost my mind.

When I started work at Ford's Dunton after two years at the Ford Trade School, and still an apprentice, we had an early 3L V6 Capri engineering prototype on the section (Environmental test). Unlike later engineering prototypes that were pretty much identical to the cars that would come off the production line, this car had panels shaped out of solid wood held together with duct tape. I kit you not. Mechanically, it was reasonably sound being built on an old Ford Classic floor-pan and suspension, but all the cosmetic bits were mocked up and held together with duct tape.

Now, as I'm guessing most of you know, vehicles without a chassis rely heavily on body panels for their strength, but we were teenage apprentices let loose with a three litre vehicle, and we thought we were invulnerable. Luckily this vehicle was waaaaay short of road legal and had no rego plates, so we could only drive round the site roads, but by heck we were still lucky not to have killed ourselves.

FWIW - I've got half a dozen assorted HDMI cables, ranging from a snake-oil Monster cable I bought way back in ~2004 when HDMI was a new thing for about $200 (I needed a cable and no one in Wellington stocked anything cheaper, assuming you could find anyone who even knew what HDMI was), to <$10 TradeMe cables of various lengths & designs.

All of them seem to handle 1080p and playback of 3D BluRay's from my PS4 just fine, as well as ARC. As the

I had one cheap cable that would sometimes produce sparkling @ 1080p when used in a certain combination, that one went to the bin.

So, as long as the cable is of even remotely decent quality, you probably don't need to worry about it too much. As long as all the wires are connected then a cable is a cable, high bandwidth requirements (such as 4K/3D) may expose inadequacies in shielding or quality but it seems to be rare for it to be a problem.

There are definitely differences, especially when you start playing around with matrix switches.

I've got a 4x4 matrix switch which can push 1080p out through a nice cable I bought from a Rapallo but can't do it down a Dynamix cable. These are 10m and 15m cable runs so they aren't short, but its here that you see the difference in quality.
