but samsung are definitely the best LCD tv's on the market. Especially if you look at something like their contrast ratio's. On a 32' theirs is 7000:1 compared to the next best brand on the market's sony bravia ratio which is about 1500:1.

Pity about there ropey deinterlacing and general cr@p picture on SD.

pebbles: Uh, the DSE tv is fine as long as you live near a powerhouse DSE otherwise good luck... but samsung are definitely the best LCD tv's on the market. It depends how they define "contrast ratio"

Sony shows " 1600:1 contrast ratio (8000:1 dynamic contrast) for deep blacks and bright whites"

That is very true, which is why I tell customers if you actually want a good quality LCD buy sony from us or a samsung elsewhere. Sony Bravia's have dropped substantially in price since they were first brought into the DSE market and are definitely a good buy when looking at quality vs the price you pay to get that quality.

I looked at some top-end plasma TV's today and was not overly impressed though i'm quite a critic as most of you are well aware!

The colour depth seemed very low (4096 colors maybe) and the images were quite obviously dithered to provide the "look of more colours" which detracted quite a bit.. In saying that, these latest plamas look amazing compared to the drabness of older models and the viewing angle and reponse time and lack of blur cannot be beaten.

LCD still suffers fron over saturation of colours and the bad viewing angle but looks amazing in good conditions and the colour depth was perfect.

Oleds currently are not up to a development point to be worthy, I have a couple of small demo oLED screens and they suffer from bad banding and poor running life and screen burn still though the colour is very impressive.

The other alternative is rear-projection which uses an expensive bulb and have a poor viewing angle still.

My TV? Is a 1983 woodgrain Philips 23" floorstander, old but very retro and gives perfect analogue reception and the smallest antenna.

I use a tiny RGB LED projector (thoshiba TDP-FF1) for the "serious" stuff running component into a DVD player and VGA thin-client.

The other trait known is this, any ambient light hits the phosphor resulting in a green or gray tinge as can be seen here.

And the back of an older but typical power-hungry plasma, so much high-tension and heat generating rubbish inside.

For the die hards http://www.lumenlab.com/ have some interesting stuff, A cheap low-res projector that uses a common as muck $65 HID lamp and this new amazing PC-in-a-plasma.... now THAT is a TV.

I very much agree, i have one of the new model 40" Samsung LCDs and its rubbish at anything less than HD content - if it wasnt extreemly cheap (read: sub $1k) i wouldnt have got it - definately would have got a Sony.

The Samsung blurs like heck, has poor de-interlacing and the damn Digital NR keeps turing itself on! (btw - anyone know how to keep it off?)

I personally am looking into a 32" Bravia D-series. at that size I won't need anymore than 720p, and I've always had a good run with sony. Plus HN has them down from $2499 to $1974 at the mo...

I think a firmware update fixes this. Check dtv forum for more details.

^^^^ i cant find it - just stuff about "movie plus" whichisnt my problem (unless movie plus and Digital NR are the same, but from the descriptions of the movie plus problems, my issue is different).

I have a Sony Bravia 3LCD 55inch rear proj, and I gotta tell you its great!! Its only as deep as a 14inch CRT tv, but it has all the bells and whistles, 1080i, hdmi, vga, component, svideo. They are only about $2500 now, so they are good bang for your buck.

If your going to buy something from Harvey Norman, ask for a cash price first, dont pay full price for anything.

And also dont let anyone boss you into getting a petty little 32 inch, you'll regret it later... like when you get it home.
