No, I am saying that the scart specs say that the red, green and blue pins need to carry an RGB signal, which uses the compisite signals sync's, whereas component outputs the sync on the green plug, as a black and white video signal, syncs take the voltage above/below what is used for the picture data, and there would be no expectation that voltages out of spec need to be passed thru, infact it would make sense for the box to chop off the excess signal to keep it in spec.

If that happens then the sync signals will be all mangled, and may be hard to get a lock on making the picture jump around as it loses lock.

To the untrained eye, your last sentence describes pretty much what is happening. The Picture may look OK (though less than ideal) then after a varying amount of time (usually seconds) the TV doesn't appear to be able to control the picture - especially around high contrast areas of the scene.

Does that mean the STB may be faulty?

The video drivers of all outputs of all Sky boxs including the MySky are fully video capable, ie there is no limitation to provide -0.3V sync, ie they can provide Y(Luma), Chroma or any video partial component channel, ie they are all the same..

As for the inputs and loop through aspect from the VCR SCART to the TV SCART, well this may be an issue. The Sky specification sheet for the MySky indicates that it support YUV and RGB passthrough, however I note on the Foxtel site the IQ (which is the identical Pace TDS/TDC460 just badged and firmwared for Foxtel) that only composite loop through is supported.

OK - well I guess I will try Sky. Although I don't hold out much hope.

Can't really exhange MySky boxes though - her indoors will kill me if we lose 12 episodes of Boston Legal.

Thanks for your help.

I found the normal sky box really mangled its composite passthru when I had it, are the mysky ones any better?

It seems it may, in fact, be my RPTV (Sony EF41). Manual says not to connect anything between the DVD player and the component in sockets - doing so "will cause unwanted picture noise". Anyone know why?

The "noise" almost goes away entirely when I turn the DVD player and TV contrast down to minimum. But you can't watch that.

Now hanging out for the next generation 1080p 50" plasmas even more.

Cheers

Rex

Hmm, the sky may be getting messed up by the macrovision on the Y signal since it goes way over white level, I forgot about that till seeing that you mentioned not connecting anything between the dvd and tv.

Is it ok on the menus before you play a dvd, and on dvds you have "backed up"??

OK - a few experiments.

"Backed up" versions of:

1. Batman Begins (16:9) - bad on all but lowest contrast.
2. Sting - Brand New Day (4:3) - OK on all but the highest contrast setting and only then when the menu overlays the sceen.

Non "backed-up" versions of Hell Freezes Over (NTSC) and James Taylor - Live at the Beacon (PAL) both 4:3 OK.

My test disk has been Dave Gilmour Remember That (Night Live at Albert Hall) (anamorphic wide screen, 14:9?) - non "backed up". Bad on all but lowest contrast setting. Sometimes the pictures jumps so bad you can see the white dots above the picture (aspect ratio etc signals I assume).

All PAL.

TV is 4:3.

Something to do with the aspect ratio?

Correct - it is 10 years old. Any component input back then was pretty good.

If i were you, i would use s-video for sky and component for dvd (or vise versa if sky looks better that way)

in my opinion, looping through equipment is best avoided, and you wont be losing much by not having your dvd through component - being that it doesnt use progressive anyway.

I agree with Illicit, use S-Video from the MySky and Component from the DVD, the EF41 being a CRT you will probably not see a major improvement, Sky lowish bit rates will be more the limiting factor.

I guess that's the best answer.

Although there is an obvious improvement for Sky on component compared to s-video  - more obvious on the higher bitrate channels (and there seems to be more of them just recently?). And I have always assumed the PQ was better for the DVD as well.

I was just really trying to maximise the PQ while having the ability to simply use the MySky remote to change component sources (on the EF41 the video source selection goes  ...  TV -->S-Video-->Video 2 (composite)--->video 3 (composite) --->Component. So it means many more presses on the remote button).

Thanks
