Raspberry pi doesn't have optical out.
Only 3.5mm analogue and HDMI audio outputs.

This is why I wouldn't bother with a pi and will just stick to an htpc. With an htpc you can always make it do whatever you want. With a pi it seems like from day one you're pushing the limits of what the thing can do. The only reason I can see to use a pi is power consumption.

Well as you know, the RPi was never designed as a HTPC - it just happens to be quite good at it. The new RPi 2 is very slick running OpenELEC. I would also go as far as to say under-utilized while playing my videos and shows... (1080p/720p)
If I had a receiver that was capable of HDMI IN, then I wouldn't have needed to create this thread and the Pi would be serving gleefully, it's just my setup is a little "old" in comparison to some of you folk :)

Not sure I am willing to go the USB audio route though - I either want to go In-line splitter or additional board connected to the GPIO port..
Preference is to go for the GPIO port, but getting a case that fits it is going to be the next little issue.

If you go the HiFiBerry route just grab one of the HiFiBerry cases at the same time?

There are inline splitters around, but they seem to cost more 9in NZ anyway) than the RPi.

Somehow I over looked that... I thought they didn't have one!

The case is an extra 15 euro's though, suddenly I'm thinking I should have just gone for the CuBox haha.

EDIT: Will also have to send an email to them before I but that case... it looks like they only provide cases for the RCA version, not the Toslink (opt) version...

Actually another "free" solution. Is to use Plex and Rasplex. Against change the files rather than all your hardware.

Just posted in the forum and got a response - looks like the cases are built to take both, so on one side it is RCA holes and on the other is the Toslink holes... kinda cool.

I did just have a look at those after you mentioned it. Had a look around on the net about the brand... looks like they don't really have proper RPi2 support yet.

I have just placed an order for the HifiBerry Digi+ and the Digi+ case... we'll see how we go when it arrives.Will try to remember to update the thread.

Thanks all for the responses! Definitely gave me some reading over the last day or so!

FYI: Loving the RPi2 at the moment as my HTPC... even though the audio isn't fantastic, the interface for Kodi is a breeze to use, especially since I can use my standard TV remote through HDMI-CEC... (one of the other reasons I avoided a splitter... No promise if CEC pass through).
