That is why I love the Motorole NYX - that just has a little USB dongle you plug into the RPi and away you go. Was pretty cheap ($60-70 from memory) and hasn't missed a beat in over a year. Can't believe there isn't something similar available.

Sorry, missed your post on FLIRC's ease of set up and now see that you've ordered it anyway.

If it still helps, it was really easy to set up, just a little time consuming. Download the software and plug it in (facing you, not round the back or you will be contorting yourself to get a signal through). Installation done! It's a little wider than a standard USB plug, so it may block access to it's neighbours.

Set up is a little more time consuming. You click on the on screen command you want, then press the button on the remote you want to assign that command to. It's time consuming because you have to do this for each button.

I use Media Portal, so I had to train it using the keyboard option (IIRC, there is a XBMC remote pre set up). So I would click on space, then press the play/pause button on the remote. Then "b", then stop on the remote. And so on.

You can use it with AutoHotKey or Ghostery if you want to get really fancy, but I found assigning a windows shortcut key to Media Portal (Ctrl+Alt+M, I think), then assigning the power button on the remote to that keypress combination worked fine.

FLIRC is just an IR receiver. Don't you already have an IR receiver from your old remote?

This is a good question, I thought you already had a remote and therefore an IR receiver? The Logitech will work with the IR receiver you have and programing the remote takes like 10min tops. Plug it into a PC, add device, search for Microsoft MCE, save, done.

Even setting up activities i.e. one button to switch everything on and set to the correct inputs/outputs takes less then 10mins.

Exactly! The only reason I can see this not working, is if it was the IR receiver that has died and not the remote. Could also be the USB port has issues. Did the OP try restarting the device and checking the receiver is actually showing as being connected?

I use a harmony with Flirc on OpenELEC. By far and away the best solution I've tried. Historically used MCE remotes and CEC and this is my favourite.

Ok Thank you that was VERY helpful I put in Microsoft > 1040 the model of the IR device and it picked it up Thanks again looks like I will be selling the Flirc when it arrives

I've found there to be increased latency with the MCE receiver compared with Flirc YMMV. It's probably configurable somewhere I've just never figured it out.

So my Flirc arrived ! trouble is I now have to decide whether to change the microsoft IR device over ,seeing as how its all working fine! You know if it aint broke and all that

I grabbed one of the HP (RC6 type, probably dodgy clone) media centre IR receivers, and it works great with the Harmony 650. Even better with the WMC Netflix plugin! Excellent combo.
