I specifically upgraded from a Celeron NUC (Well, D2820) to an i5 NUC because the D2820 NUC would NOT smoothly play anything at 1080 that was outside the XBMC or hardware accellerated codec support.

This meant Lightbox, Netflix and Youtube were not smooth and CPU bound.

The i5 NUC has been brilliant (Except for some stupid driver issues that mean I have to reboot it occasionally as the screen starts flickering - only happens when it's idle - I suspect a suspend or driver issue to do with changing outputs)

Whats the cheapest way to run windows on one of these. I might abandon Mint or at least dual boot to see if the jerkiness is resolved with a different OS.

windows 10 technical preview. free way to test (well only cost you time)

I dont think they do, but you can purchase an add on from Pulse Eight.

Yeah - that's the trouble. If you want 1080i deinterlaced, you really want as much juice as you can get. 1080p is much easier by comparison.

I use a NUC 5i5RYK (w/m.2 SSD) with Arch Linux, Kodi, Amarok and mythtv (frontend). Aside from not having the Adv. 2x deinterlacer offered by VDPAU (an nVidia-only feature) it's perfect as a quiet, small HTPC.

This one is an i7 and has a fan, but I have read reviews saying it is quiet for general use....

What do you think, I know it is overkill but it has the best grahpics out of the NUC's

just for home theater use very much "overkill" but grahpics card needs upgrade if you want to use it for gaming as well
im impressed by the size but will it stay cool enough when under load
do they com with remote like other units

Non of the NUC's come with remotes, they have a built in IR sensor though...

Funny you should mention these , I own one of these and am currently using it with Kodi.... works like a dream... (I brought a brand new one off ebay for $11 though :)

I have used http://xbmccustomregis.sourceforge.net/ with a few little tweaks to make it work better... i.e. It doesnt have the colored buttons that most remotes have so I have tagged a button to cycle through subtiles or disable them...

This remote arrived today and does not work with my NUC. Not an "ideal companion" as advertised.

I have a new Intel i3 NUC (5 Gen) running Windows 7 Pro (x64) with Media Center.
It has the latest Nuvoton SIO CIR Device Driver.
The NUC works perfectly using a USB keyboard and mouse - but does not respond to any of the buttons on the HP remote (with new batteries).
The remote LED flashes with each command, but nothing happens ...

Does anyone here have experience with this problem?

that remote should definitely work with the NUC.

i dont use mediacentre (i use mediaportal) but if theres an option for remotes in mediacentre somewhere, you need to enable it as a "MCE" remote.

Problem solved:

The IR device drivers were corrupt - fixed on Troubleshooting in Devices and Printers.

Now to look for something better than Media Centre - I'll have a play with MediaPortal.
