So why does the MCE remote have this ability and there is no way to give the same ability to the Hauppauge remote?
That is what I am trying to discover.
If the ir port is powered off when pc goes into standby then why can the mce remote still work?

USB ports are typically still powered when the machine goes into standby mode or is turned off. The same applies to the PS2 keyboard connector and mouse so this is why the power button on your keyboard, mouse or MCE remote can turn the machine on/off at the push of a button. Many systems either have jumpers or bios settings to allow you to enable or disable these features.

Is it a hardware option or a software options that leaves the usb powered? can I choose to leave other areas powered as well like my tv tuner?

It is hardware and no, you can't just leave a PCI card such as a TV card powered up.

Thankyou. If you find a stunning breakthrough that I can use can you keep me in mind please?
I am convinced there must be a way to do it without buying yet another remote so I wont give up trying to find a solution.

You wouldn't need another remote, if you had a MCE IR Receiver you could just program the power button onto your other remote control and use that.

I would have thought this could be done within bios as well.. Most OEM hardware support Bios Wakeup via a timeclock, I remember on the HP/Compaq machines I configured all the machines at a customer site to Poweron at 3am to perform sw upgrades using the Compaq supplied config tool.  This was only due to us not being able to forward WOL packets over the wan.
Also as has been said before, a USB / PS2.. Also can be done via Serial if it is configured as a Modem in BIOS (respond to RING command)... But by the sounds of it a MCE IR blaster may just be easier as it has the drivers in there already, which would be the other major issue with finding the right hardware.

You could look at getting something like this..

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/remotes/universal_remotes/devices/377&cl=us,en#

Then you can send any command you want...

Media centre PC - Case Silverstone LC16M with 2 X 80mm AcoustiFan DustPROOF, MOBO Gigabyte MA785GT-UD3H, CPU AMD X2 240 under volted, RAM 4 Gig DDR3 1033, HDD 120Gig System/512Gig data, Tuners 2 X Hauppauge HVR-3000, 1 X HVR-2200, Video Palit GT 220, Sound Realtek 886A HD (onboard), Optical LiteOn DH-401S Blue-ray using TotalMedia Theatre Power Corsair VX Series, 450W ATX PSU OS Windows 7 x64

Thanks
I was hoping to avoid having to get another remote. Even the option above basically means getting another remote because there is no wa here in NZ to get a mce ir blaster/receiver without getting a remote as well.

I just felt with the 2 remotes I already have for the 2 tv tuners and the one for the av receiver and the other for the television, and the one for the stb I had more than enough remotes.

The one for the av receiver is already a learning remote, it is just the method of sending a signal from them to the HTPC that I am lacking.

Cheers

With the remote above you would only need the one remote. Basically they are like a learning remote but on steroids. They can learn but Logitech have something like 170,000 devices in their database so more then likely already have all your devices.

Also they can run macros so that it will turn on your TV, PC and STB and switch everything to the right inputs all by pressing one button.

I have the one linked above and would never go back... neither would my wife.

Yeah well it is looking more and more like I may have to get some type of new remote.

My Onkyo av receiver remote has macros and learns too so I was hoping that would be enough, plus my wife has only just gotten her head around its uses but if needs must, I will cahnge.

Do you have a Home theatre pc yourself? Can you confirm this can actually send it a signal to wake from standby?

No sorry that is next years project..

I do seem to recall that they do have a listing of the hardware that it does support or you can setup a mock setup online so maybe that will be able to confirm for you if it supports the hardware you have.

I also have an Onkyo AV Receiver remote and I use this for *everything*.  My HTPC case (zalman hd160) came with a MCE Remote and IRTrans receiver and, after teaching the Onkyo all the commands (plus macos to switch everything on/off), i put the MCE remote in the drawer (along with the plasma remote) and havent used it since.

Do you have a Home theatre pc yourself? Can you confirm this can actually send it a signal to wake from standby?

Luckily the IRTrans unit is USB based and can do the standby/resume thing no problem, but I actually never turn it off anyway.  The HTPC spins down the hdd's and fans etc when idle so i decided that was enough.  Besides, I also access it remotely and I couldnt do that if it was powered off... (unless i config'd magic packet WOL stuff i guess)

Hi again Regs

I think that may be the answer then. It sounds like you are a lot closer to achieving what I was after than I am, so at least there is hope that I will get there.

I will look out for one then. Was the remote or software actually neccessary at all or could you have set up what you have with just the usb irtrans? What I mean by that is do you think it would be possible to set up the one more command using a normal usb to irda or do I definately have to buy a mce remote and blaster.

Thanks
