A few years ago in the UK the governing body stipulated that all promos and commercial be 16:9. I guess there's no such rule here as broadcasters continue to show a mixture in ad breaks.
I don't understand why someone would make a 4:3 spot - especially if it's a movie promo for a 16:9 film but there you are. I suspect it's just always the way it's been done and no-one ever said hey, let's make them 16:9.
I wish freeview would do it properly as then maybe I'd be able to watch TV content on iTunes. At the moment if I export it's super stretched.

Ahhh Cday, no we never had that here, however both TVNZ and Canwest issued guidelines several months before shifting to 16:9 where they requested that all new ads are provided in 16:9, a request not a rule.

It seems to me that the template software to geenrate promos on Sky Movies have simply not been updated to 16:9, as Sky Mt Wellington facility is currently have a major overhaul with the support of 16:9 on all channels being a major item expect to see sky moving more toward 16:9 on all its channels. There is a comment about this in the lattest SkyWatch.

No dunno sorry, however according to the Jan08 Skywatch the number of 16:9 channels will dramatically increase during 2008.

webstereo: Isn't it an issue for video if you want to watch high def from a Blue Ray player?
As far as auto switching is concerned for watching TV in NZ using DVB-S it's not relevant as the broadcasters don't utilise it. I don't know about sky.

Since most of skys channels are 4:3 still, its very relevent when you are changing channels so you dont have to keep changing the aspect on the TV

Yeah I agree with you but as I said I don't know about Sky - i.e how they deal with 16:9 because I don't have it and probably never will.
I had a lovely Toshiba widesreen in London that dealt with freeview there beautifully.
They use Avid to cut entertainment promos at sky. You can do stuff in 16:9 they just don't.
