freitasm: Looks good... But no wireless LAN.

What does "ISO" means? Can you load a DVD ISO image and play it?

I have a Pinnacle Showcenter 1000 which has a slot for a wireless G card. But before I got the card I slotted in a Wireless G bridge into the ethernet port and that works well, so much so I haven't bothered to put the card in. And the Wireless G bridge sits outside the cabinet and has an external antenna.

The Popcorn thing looks interesting but I would wonder if I could stream HD over 802.11g or need to go to 802.11n

Inbult wireless is silly IMO - its not like it will be the only thing in the entertainment cabinet which needs networking so to add to the cost of each item and end up with more then one radio in close proximity (a recipie to kill thruput) you just get a single wireless bridge you can elevate up higher or put external antennas on. My mate had to pull his wii out of the cabinet onto the floor inorder to get a reliable connection to his lan, the thing would say it had connected but the thruput was so low with it jammed in around all that other metal. That didn't have an Ethernet port on it which IMO is the stupidist omission ever.

the popcornhour looks promising. Would be awesome if it could act as a front end for mythtv and watch live tv over the lan. If it ends up doing that then I think a server with 3 dvb-t cards in it, lots of storage and these as front ends would be a killer setup

The more I look at the popcornhour, both its functionality and price I cannot see where it could go wrong, it seems to have the concept sorted.

Seems many people agree since there is waiting list to get one it appears. At least when I tried to see if I could get one, while it allowed me to register it talked about next tranch of purchases in 2 months!

Chances are they lack the capital to do big production runs since that all has to be paid well up front to component suppiers etc so as they get more profitable the batch sizes should go up, also the preorders will help them to secure a loan to get them made.

I will be putting my name forward in a couple of weeks to go on the list - Can see nothing wrong with it spec wise and the software looks to be rapidly evolving so buying is a no brainer. Like the slingbox back in the day.

The Popcorn Hour A-100 looks great but has anybody seen the TVIX, I have just ordered one from Oz.

I seems to have the same chipset as Popcorn Hour A-100 but it also includes a DVB-T tuner for when Freeview finally gets its terrestrial Transmitters going. Making the TVIX not only a Network Media player but a full blown HD PVR as well.

I will let you know how it goes

You may regret the money you just spent on the Ozz Tvix as the DVB-T tuner will not work in NZ. I looked at this back in Nov last year but I could not get one without the tuner.. The Tvix distributers in NZ seem reluctant to bring in the latest models on the old ones that file playback is out of the ark

If I am not mistaken Freeview is already transmitting test signals through DVB-T and will officially go online in March with TVNZ providing HD content starting with the Olympics in August.

I haven't got a price from Oz, getting a friend over there to buy it for me, looks like AU$500 and will have to put a SATA drive in it. Bit on the pricey side but ticking all my boxes.

The NZ Freeview and Australian DVB-T standards are different and incompatable. You may as well go and buy a TVIX with an ATSC tuner in it. You will get the same result as if you buy one with a Ozz tuner in it.. Ozz DVD-t is Mpeg 2 . NZ is Mpeg4

Are DVB-T the same in Nz and the UK? I seem to remember reading somewhere that they were??

The UK DVB-T mpeg4 transmissions should be compatible enought to not cause any grief depending on how configurable the STB is. However all DVB-T mpeg2 tuners from UK (for the current UK FreeView system) obviously wont work.

Dont think there are a lot of mpeg4 STBs available in the UK and I thought the Crystal palace trial had finished.

Reading the specs on the Aus market TVix PVR M-4130SH/5130SH it would seem it should work, it supports all the mpeg4 standards that FreeView are using here, it has the same decoder as the popcornhour, and unless the tuner is locked down to the Aussie 7MHz channeling (we use 8MHz as does the UK, every tuner assembly on the market has been 6,7,8MHz capable for at leasst 5yrs now) I dont see why I should not work here.

hey guys.. new here found this thread while searching to check if my tvix 4130hd will work with the freeview...

according to the specs on the tvix website the tuner unit is

Supports all formats of European DVB-T and Australian AS4933 spec.

Crystal-clear high-resolution (up to 1920X1080i) picture Quality

Supports DVB-T EPG(Electronic Program Guide)

hopefully this will work in nz .. if it supports all formats of DVB-T then maybe it will do the mpeg4 decode.. i will let you know when the terrestrial signal gets going next month

Depends where you live in the country but there are I believe test trans running in the main centers curently.

I'd be interested in your findings as I was going to buy one of these as a digital VCR which is about what they are..
