rokki: Re the Pioneer LX89 it didn't seem to be on the NZ Website.
It's also over $5k so...
$3700 for a Yamaha.
$2k for an Onkyo.
Pioneer LX59 $3799

Hah, yeah... NZ pricing for HT gear is such the flogged horse but it really grates. Denon AVR x4200 ~$1850NZ in the UK or $3,500 here... le sigh.
I have been thinking about Atmos also but the wiring puts me off (as well as the cost!).
At the last CES I saw this Samsung Soundbar Atmos system which I though was very impressive.

In fact it was in this very room where I heard the demo.
Having a wireless sub and wireless rear surrounds and upfiring Atmost speakers makes installation very easy and the soundfield (in that room anyway was very effective.
No pricing but the rep said it should not be more than about US$200 or so more than than their current top of the line soundbar at $1200 ro maybe $1400-$1500. That seems reasonable.

Are the rears wireless (off batteries)? Or are they powered?
All powered. The front bar provided LCR and Left Height (bouncing off ceiling) and Right Heigt (ditto). Sub was powered and wireless.
Rear speakers had at least two drivers in them Left Rear and Left Height (bouncing off ceiling again) and simillarly for Right Rear.
They were wireless and mains powered.
So you had an Atmos 5.1.4 system which I thought was very effective (manufacturer's demo material and room configuration not withstanding)

Simulated surround sound depends largely on your room shape, but to be fair, great home theatre rooms are also dependant on room acoustics... It's all about choices.
