Fossie: Amazing race...scrubs...both of these are shot in 4:3. Currently the freeview channels are being rebroadcast by sky. Hopefully this will change this year...Their bitrate is appalling.

I wish SouthPark was in 16:9 - it's not like they need to upgrade the cameras!

agreed. It seems their bitrates on the sports channels still only run at about 3.5mb/s, even a 'premium channel' like The Rugby Channel runs this low. Quite apalling really.

cyril7: Parliment, Statos, and MaoriTV on sky are just redirections to the FreeView muxs, currently TVOne/2 on Sky are via Skys own muxs, and will continue to the contract between TVNZ and Sky ends in 2011, which means unless some compromise is made (ie We will let you have Prime if you let us drop our TVNZ streams for expample) then Sky subs will continue to see a low bit rate TV1/2.

I am pretty sure (unless Sky has dropped the TV3&4 in the last few weeks and re-directed to the freeview MUXs) that 3&4 are still being carried by Sky on their own muxes as well.

From what I have seen the Freeview streams are ~6MB/s, whereas the Sky ones are 3-4MB/s.. no matter what sky channel you are watching. Will be interesting to see what Sky do when they plan to go HD.... there isn't much spare capacity left on D1.... they might be 'a compress'n a little be more.......

Yep TV3/C4 Sky are still on Skys 12644 mux, pity they dont come to some agreement and push Sky subs onto all the FreeView ones, but I guess thats concept is fowled by more politics and commercial interests than I care to ponder.

I am not sure were you are right, they have TP space for up to 12 HD channels (Mpeg 4 + 8psk) or 30 SD channels (Mpeg 2 + Qpsk), if they take their options for the extra 2 TP's. also if they decide to go 8psk if all decoders are able too, then add about 50% per TP. So in total, upto about 150 channels including SD + HD.

I aim to misbehave.

As I understand it (bit rusty here) Sky have dibs on two more whole transponders on D1, operating them with 22500kSym/s DVB-S2 8psk muxs would give them roughly 4x 45Mb/s usable streams. Based on 10-12Mb/s for each mpeg4 HD channel thats capacity for 16HD channels.

The new Foxtel iQ2 (which is also the new MySky2) has 4x DVB-S2 tuners so can handle the above 8psk muxs.

Of course the more likely usage is half and half, 2x 8psk DVB-S2 muxs for 8HD channels (or 4HD channels plus non realtime VOD streams) and 2x DVB-S muxs giving 14-16more SD channels, or some combination thereof.

Edit, just rechecked and Sky still have two whole transponders NZTP9 and TP10 to take up, so as above thats 4muxs configured however.

I do not beieve they will use DVB-S2 for SD channels as they would have to upgrade all DVB-S decoders at a very high cost, this is Sky remember

. I am sure you are right, as I was only going by the Canadian standard of 12Mbps - 15Mbps per HD stream. except Bell which uses 9Mbits/s as Mpeg2 + Qpsk and 3 HD channels per TP.

I aim to misbehave.

Hi, never suggested that DVB-S2 would be used on anything other than muxs carrying HD services for obvious reasons.

10-12Mb/s seems to be pretty much the norm.

Hi,

Cyril, I never implied that you said they would, all I was saying is I cannot see them upgrading the SD channels anytime soon to DVB-S2, due to the amount of older decoders, though sooner they do the better as we will have access to more channels, as well as higher bit rates.
