Bit confused.

Media server doesn't play the movies, just streams it to the client.

Do you mean your running plex theatre (client) under w10 and plex media server on NAS.

Can you avoid transcoding completely by picking format who ch primary display method can play natively ?

Ie Google direct play plex (can't post link)

Installed it, but gave up. My mouse would not control the App. Keyboard Yes, but it is too difficult.

I had the same issue - but my Harmony universal remote controls it nicely. I just needed to add a Flirc to the HTPC at around $30.

What about trying something like VLC player on the HTPC and browsing to your NAS from that? I assume that's possible. VLC should play anything.

I don't have an HTPC.

My initial issue was that I have a Synology NAS which from a Windows 10 PC (Laptop) will not play mkv's, but will play from the NAS on my Samsung TV.

But, after a suggestion in the posts, installing Plex Media Server on the laptop does play mkvs.

My conclusion (eventually) was the NAS was transcoding the mkvs when I access the NAS via a browser on the laptop. Now I don't know why it does this and how to (if at all) stop it.

Sorry, If I have misled anyone.

I have found Handbrake to be a little buggy. Any Video Converter by ANVSoft is my tool of choice. It is free, does the job without any nonsense, and only displays an easily closeable nag banner after it is finished. I haven't tried it with everything, but it seems to accept a wide range of file types and I have never had a problem with conversions to MP4 and MP3. It never hangs, never stutters, never has an issue of any kind and it is pretty fast, too. I haven't put the output quality to any kind of test, but it seems good to my eye and ear.

I have several problematic WMV files which i've tried quite a few different converters to get into h264 (handbrake/nero plus about 3 or 4 others). They all failed, badly. Mostly program crashes, i'm guessing they use the same codec so it is common to all the ones i tried.

But, the ANVSoft converter worked!!! Thx a bunch.

Apologies, I assumed that the client PC was being used as a HTPC. In any event, VLC on your laptop should also be a solution should the Plex client give you hassles using the mouse.

This is Googleable but I also know the steps pretty well. Open the web view, select settings, select the Web settings tab, select player, choose streaming quality for your local network.
