R, you're right. So there's no way I'm gonna roll over and play dead with this problem.

One idea I had was to set up an old power tool (like a worn-out skilsaw that could sit out in the weather under a bucket) on the ground alongside the boundary hedge, and, when ever the jungle drums started, fire it up remotely. Then start and stop it at odd intervals until the noise stopped.

Only thing wrong with that scenario is that my other neighbors might get peed-off I'd end up with the Noise Police visiting me. LOL.

Still, I could feign senility and incompetence. Not too hard, actually.

Be careful. It sounds like they are real dropkicks, so it could easily escalate.

Keep calling noise control (along with the other 15 people).
When the Council keeps getting a bill tied to the same problem they will try to resolve it.
I'd also look at getting something in the local rag too. Community newspaper people like asking councils questions. And Councils like to be seen to be involved in engaging with 'their' community.

Council's tend to work on the principle of liking good publicity, and, attending most quickly to the squeaky wheel......

There will be Community face book pages you can target too.

As has been iterated many times above, active noise cancelling won't help you out much, although I've just bought myself a pair of PSB M4U 2's with ANC and they're stunning in terms of audio quality. Not quite as good at the noise cancelling as Bose's Quietcomforts (those patent hoarding swines) but leagues ahead in enjoyment. You could get a pair of those and drown 'em out with sweet sweet sounds.

It sounds like you might be after noise isolation, I'd recommend the Shure 215 LTD. Great sounding pair of IEMs that blocks near everything out. You might try looking at some products by Etymotics as well, they are wizards with earpieces.

alasta, oxnsox and Incindre:

Thanks guys, for those comments (and also everyone else who's been helpful over this annoying problem).

I'm still mulling over a course of action that doesn't involve explosives.

Cheers :-)

Don't have much knowledge in this area but wonder if there's some way to bounce the noise back with a temporary structure or interfere with it using white noise?

Try these you can't get much better, after just being on a flight i was amazed out how much noise they blocked out.

Otherwise fight noise with noise or try calling noise control.

Gemini: If I could get a truckload of demo bricks for free (like several thousand) I could build a mortarless wall on the boundary that would be pretty effective. Bricks, blocks and concrete are all very good at blocking sound. But expensive items to buy. Dynamite or petrol is much cheaper :-)

A gizmo that generated a high volume of reciprocal wave forms would probably cancel the noise out, in the same way that noise cancelling cans work. But if I could invent and produce something like that, I'd probably make enough money to move elsewhere :-)

B: Yeah, I guess that those super-duper headsets would be effective. But the best are prohibitively expensive.

Fighting noise with noise would just get me in the s**t with neighbors. And noise control? With the Southland District Council, a waste of time. Read my earlier posts.
