I don't know what cat5 you are thinking of, but their cat5 is completely different from ours.

Looks the same to me - remember that is multiple runs of Cat5e - not a single cable.

And it is not only Monster... Denon sells a 1.5m ethernet cable for US$499... And if they sell it for this price is probably because someone buys it.

That's not an ethernet cable, it's a Ultra Premium "Denon Link" cable! :D

No worse then microsoft and their $40 xbox link cable, and their component cables that are well more expensive then any others that are available.

It costs them stuff all to provide those purchasing options, and if someone buys one then its majpr profit for them. Fools with money are great.

Isn't it like 10x worse than Microsoft's offering?  I mean $40 may be a ripoff, but $500 is worse!

In proportion to the cost of the thing that its being connected to, its about the same. People say to spend 10% on cables, so they are just catering to that market ;)

Thats because your not a fool, but hi-fi shops will always trot out that line to flick a few cables with anything they sell. more margins in them then anything else.

I just bought a Freeview box from DSE which came with a set of really crappy thin component cables. They look similar to a very cheap pair of audio cables and are probably worth next to nothing.

I had a set of Monster component cable kicking around and tried two sets – going from the DTT HD Freeview to the HD Plasma and couldn’t tell a difference in the picture. I’m not so sure though when I  swapped with HDMI cable – I think there is an improvement there.

I also run audio through copper, coax digital and optical digital – and not sure there is much of a difference between these. But then I can’t be bothered trying to swap 14 cables around to pick a difference.

HEAPS worse!

$40 for a cable is slightly high, but "ok" in the grand scheme of things. These companys have to be able to make a profit somewhere, but many hundreds of dollars is just a blatant ripoff.

At SD res you need a reasonable distance to get any problems with crap cables, with HD, even 2 meters is enough to start to get really offensive edge ringing.

On SD I could see it clearly on a set of crappy cellnet branded ones (10 meters long) on a 32" LCD - that was on the edges of graphics rather then picture content. You would be hard pressed to see it on picture since there are less harsh contrasting edges to get artifacts from. 2 meter cables and it wasn't visible.

You should certainly spot a difference going from component to HDMI. Component is only delivering a SD picture - HDMI is delivering a HD picture which will either be native HD or upscaled to HD. Both look far superior to a regular SD picture.

You can get 1080p across component cable. It might be analogue but it still supports HD.

The poster was referring to a Freeview box so component = SD only.
