I went through the same thing a couple of months ago when the last video store anywhere near me closed. In the end I bought an Apple TV and just accepted it is slightly inferior in picture and sound to bluray. But rentals come out at the same time as new release videos and are the same price ($NZ8) and is good enough for my FHD projector and 5.1 sound system.
I asked for the ATV4 thread http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=76&topicid=180506&page_no=6 to be unlocked on 17 May 16 for this very reason.

I have a FireTV and wouldn't really be keen to add an Apple TV. I wonder if it's possible to get the Apple App on my FireTV and just use my Apple Account to access resources?

Makes me gag but I guess I could buy the content on our "educational" ipad and airplay the movie to my FireTV.

I bought an app recently for our Amazon Fire TV that enables Airplay from our iPads to the Fire; I'm not sure whether iTunes movies etc can be transmitted via Airplay, and if so what audio is provided for. But, if one can transmit full-quality video and audio, this could be a solution of sorts to avoid buying an Apple TV perhaps?

I get all my movies from from MS film and TV app (on the xbox).  No complaints, it works.  Price wise it's the same as a new release dvd ~$7-8 per rental.

I like that you can watch the trailer before deciding to rent the movie.  Something that is lacking with Netflix I've found.

Yes but only in SD and don't even think of using a TiVo to rent it on..

Here's the one reason I can think of as a positive for living in Palmy - my local (and PN's only) rental has new release DVDs and Blurays for $4...

That said, my ^%$&$ bluray play seems particularly susceptible to dust/scratches etc, so while I appreciate the sound/picture quality, it's certainly a less consistent experience compared to using a SVOD.

My Xbox One, number of Windows 10 PC's and my Windows 10 Mobile are set to US region. Get cheaper movies, apps and games this way. All you need to do is change region to USA in control panel on a PC, Xbox One or Windows 10 Mobile and you are presented with the US store. You can either use amazon to buy digital store credit for Microsoft store or buy digital credit from US Microsoft store and redeem online. Your NZ Microsoft account will work just fine. I used my YouShop details.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Its not always cheaper since the NZD has tanked for things. PITA to change account over, unlike steam.

I actually think I have 2 accounts, 1 USA and 1 NZ from memory. Does that sound feasible or likely? I don't know for sure, since there is a thick layer of dust from lack of use on my X1 unfortunately.

Are you close to one of the major Public Libraries?

I've found (in my local big central library at least) they have a great selection of Blu-ray & DVDs.
