James Bond: Thanks for the replies. In regards to LCD TVs coming out with integrated Digital tuner, what kind of difference in price can we expect to have in general from current models?

Also, we are talking about DVB-T here in terms of Integrated TV tuners, right? or DVB-S as well?

We are talking DVB-T tuners. There are very few TV's available with DVB-S tuners - don't ask why as I don't know. You would think with the large market for DVB-S there would be more!

As for the difference in price it's a bit of an unknown at this stage. Certainly expect to pay a small premium but I think we will see integrated tuner models replace existing models, not site side by side.

askelon: According to my wholesalers the first LCD TV to have an integrated decoder in it will be one of the Olevia branded ones and should hit our shores in the next week or two. Not sure on price at this stage but if its a replacement model for their standard 42" then expect around $1750RRP. Past that I know nothing about them :)

The're a US brand that entered the US market several years ago and has done very well over there as a good bang for your buck product.

Well I picked up a Samsung 32" lcd with 2 x hdmi from Bond and Bond about 2 months ago and it's fantastic. Rich colours and combined with Freeview DVB-S it's just spot on. $1150.

My 2c worth - buy something now. Technology has a nasty way of constantly updating so the catch phrase "wait a couple of months because xx is coming out" means you spend so much time waiting, then paying top dollar for new technology. Yes you can wait a few months for intergrated tuners, assuming you can pick up DVB-T at your location. But for that couple of months wait, you don't have the use of a new tv. What if the tuner package is delayed till Xmas ? Do you keep waiting ?

Like cellphones and particularly computer components, waiting for the next thing to arrive means doing without what you want, right now. I chose to get a Freeview PVR a couple of months ago too, because I needed it (got addicted to pausing live tv with me media centre!) and decided to not wait for a DVB-T version. Maybe by Xmas I'll change my mind and get one, but the good news is that the one I have right now is working, right now.

Agreed, but its also a matter of what you personally are happy to wait for versus what concessions you want to make.

If you're happy to have a Sky set top box, a Freeview satellite one and potentially a Freeview terrestrial one then I'm not going to say anything about it that's your choice.

Its the same with price, if you're happy to pay $6k for a tv (like the early adopters did) then all the better - you've got to have the early adopters so the manufacturers can get some products out there (= money) so they are willing to update it...

Everyone has to put a stake in the ground as to when they'll enter the market and what they consider important...

EDIT: BTW not a rant just a comment, I re-read my post and I came of as a bit ranty....
