Have you tried Plex with HDHomeRun? Also is your HDHomeRun the older HR3 version?

The web site says it is for windows. To me that means that my laptop would have to run 24 x 7 and I would have to be mindful of when I could shut down the laptop for windows updates etc.

I would prefer any such S/W to run on my Synology NAS.

Nevertheless, I can give it a go.

I recommend tvheadend which also "just works" with HDhomerun. Totally free, automatic full 7 day EPG over the air. Synology packages available here: http://syno.dierkse.nl/

Plex, and HDHomeRunDVR and Kodi and a bunch of other things only work the the HDHomeRun Prime or connects. The old Dual ones don't have the same API commands, so you generally need something in the way that can access BDA drivers, ie myth, tvheadend (I think) mediaportal, nextpvr or MCE if you can get it installed, or still have a machine.

Take a read at Supported DVR Devices on Plex.

Just the older HDHomeRuns need Plex Media Server 1.5.0 or newer.

My Synology DS216Play just arrived today (will be unboxing tonight) and I also need to get HDDs. Most likely (because I have a Plex Pass subscription) I will try the following format: HDHomeRun HR3 connected to Plex (DVR) on Synology NAS.

Also, is it possible to watch live TV through Plex through the HDHomeRun anywhere in the world? I know I can watch recorded TV shows through Plex anywhere in the world if set up correctly.

I thought it was just recording. The only things so far that can do live via plex, are the mythtv, mediaportal and nextpvr channels. I don't htink they've written that in yet. But I could be wrong given I didn't realise that my HDHomeRun Dual (which is pre-Connect I believe)- might show up (and I'm just doing a channel scan with it now).

Though it couldn't pull an EPG - seemed to want vodafone? But anyway I have an xmltv file in my network anyway that I can use instead.

You just pick the one which matches your particular NAS. The DS216Play has a 'monaco' SoC.

Now have it installed (4.1.2409).

But ...

Tried the wizard but got nothing. It can see the HDHomeRun Connect, but I assume the problem is that it shows DVB-C.

Once again (very) stuck.

I've got my HD HomeRun connected up via a switch and when playing on VLC through the HD HomeRun setup, the video is pretty good but it's not perfect. Also, every few seconds the audio will chop a bit. Does anybody else have this audio issue? My PC is also connected up to the switch via a Cat 5e ethernet cable.

That could either be an aerial problem or an Ethernet problem. It would be best to try it connected directly to a PC to eliminate the possibility of Ethernet congestion, but the most likely reason is that you do not have a good enough signal on its aerial input. How is it getting that signal?

Maybe you need to explain exactly what you mean by "time shifting", because as far as I understand it, time shifting is the same as recording. You record a programme, and watch it at a later time. Good software will allow you to watch a programme as it is being recorded, and also to watch live TV by selecting a channel to view, then pause it in the middle to have a coffee break and come back later. And also to decide you want to go to bed now, so turn the live TV session into a normal recording session so you can finish watching it later without leaving a paused picture on the system if anyone else wants to use it.

I use MythTV, which can do all of the above, but I find I just do not use live TV at all - I set things to record, and occasionally watch them while they are recording.

The, for want of a better phrase, native tuner device for Emby is the HDHomeRun, so it might be worth a try. They are also introducing timeshifting, think its in beta. Generally seems to work well, though early days. Works for me though don't have a HDHomeRun (no DVB-T) so use PCI-E DVB-S card and NextPVR to feed Emby.

Not free though but you can try it out for US$4.99pm. Think, no guarantees the server is free and you can try out TV in a web browser for free.
