In LV Martin yesterday, when I asked what was going to replace the Bravia D series (which has been discontinued) - are the new ones going to include digital tuners - they said they weren't expecting *any* brands to come out with digital tuners before late 2008.

I've heard otherwise - expect 2 major brands to have TV's in the marketplace before mid August.

I had read your comment on the previous page - I wasn't trying to suggest you were wrong :-)

I guess the point was they don't know for sure.

Either that or they didn't want me to leave empty handed saying I'd come back in Mid August. (<== most likely)

Without mentioning any particular stores I think the real problem is that the retail staff these days just don't know enough about the products they are selling, or more importantly the technology behind the products. This is an industry problem, not just something occuring in any particular chain.

In the old days there wasn't much to explain about TV's. You had a Philips K9 and that was it. Now technology has changed so much that many retail staff know very little about the products they sell but still believe they know everything. Many are misleading consumers who put faith in the guy/girl in the shop being an expert but the reality is they are far from it. There some very good people out there but there are also a lot of very lousy sales people who don't know anything. As we move into an HD world things are getting even worse and unfortunately there is no easy solution.

There's been an ad in paper over the last couple of weeks from the company that 'understands 100%' (guess who?) HD. They then go on to announce HD pictures as having 1920 rows...

Yes. I actually have two different print ads from them printed on the same day that contain different text. They certainly don't understand HD 100% based upon their content! I scanned them to write a blog post which started but haven't got around to finishing.

Looking at getting a 32" tv for upstairs, but a built in dvb-t tuner would be great.

Any news at all on this?

Anyone seen new Uniden TVs at DSE? The product prochure says it has a built in HD digital tuner. Not sure if it's terrestrial though.

being an australian site thos tv will be dvb-t , but the Australian MPeg2 standard not our h.264 based system.

They way I figure it is these "brands" bring out the sets can only really add about $400 to the price of the sets since that's the costs of a dvb-t box....or it doesn't become worth it - IMO.

The product brochure is Australian which uses MPEG2. You probably wouldn't find a new TV anywhere in Australia that does't have a digital tuner, these have been the norm for for the past 2-3 years.

I would suspect the models that DSE sell in NZ will be slightly different to the Aussie models and probably only have an analogue tuner and not analogue+digital.
