Thanks @scuwp. Itunes a bit limited, but Amazon looks near-enough. Amazing that local+physical distributors are still a nose ahead of global+virtual ones.

google play is another option.

Thanks @NightStalker, Google Play scored 12/15 on my test which is not as good as Amazon but good enough to be useful. It will probably play better with my devices too.

^^^ +1 .... ironically only people who pay for content have to endure the warnings. If you were ripping a movie you would edit that out.

Try playing them on a MythTV box - it allows you to skip anything by ingoring the instructions on the disks that say otherwise.

With Fatso it was a fixed cost for 3 movies a month which was a good way to supplement something like Netflix.

Fatso had various offerings but they were all 'x discs at any one time' not per month so if you turned them around quickly you could get through maybe 10 or 15 per month.

Something had gone wrong with their system though because for the past year or so I have been able to get 12 discs at any one time even though I was on the plan for 4.

I thought they were a great service with a huge range of titles including some pretty obscure movies and TV series. I've looked over the various streaming options and none of them come anywhere near.

I'm going to miss Fatso too.

With fewer subscribers I've been getting new release DVD's earlier than I could see them on any online offering.

Sky should be making Fatso titles available on Neon. Like a Fatso online service.

Although it would be awesome to be able to rip all their titles, legally that's a no go. They will be giving them away mostly.

No significant cost saving, faster access to something that is lower quality with orders of magnitude less choice. Yay for technology & movie streaming...

Even the mighty Netflix USA catalog has less title choice than your average DVD rental store (well, average in their hayday of 2007-2010 or so), but "if content were king", video shops would still be alive and kicking. Convenience trumps content it seems

Anyone with a fatso account might want to check their last bill.

you are supposed to get a discount so you only pay for the percentage of the billing cycle you can actually use before fatso closes.
on mine they mucked up the amount due and charged the amount to be discounted instead of the normal price minus the amount to be discounted.

eg - was charged $29.26 instead of $10.73

fatso were good about it and quickly fixed it when notified

Check out the Alice in Videoland Facebook page, they announced something last week and are taking reservations for a new DVD delivery service.

They acknowledged they won't have the same depth/qty so have to initially restrict numbers

the screen shot I attached was a precautionary grab I did prior to the visa being charged as a I thought it might be a glitch but would be charged the correct amount anyway but that didn't happen.

You might have to do a manual check.
Go to "my account" and then to "view payment history" it should show you what they charged you and check that against your credit card etc.

If its not clear you may have to work it out from when your billing cycle starts and when they close (23rd Nov)
eg if your billing cycle started 9-nov you should only pay about 50% of what you normally would.

I've started using Aro Video in Wellington. Normal DVD rental so quite a bit more expensive than Fatso but pretty big collection (23,000+) and I've found some movies that Fatso didn't have.

The delivery service is good. Order one day and they arrive the next.
