Whats wrong with your xbox? xbmc is a GREAT peice of software, i havnt found anything even close to it as a media centre!! Its not that complicated to setup, what are you having problems with? The only thing you have to be wary of is that the xbox isnt powerful enough to play HD content, but considering my content is 95% SD it works flawlesly..  And the ps3 what a joke that is for a media centre!! the worlds most horrible front end!! sure it plays divx and a couple of other formats but thats it, xbmc plays a shedload more than this. i have a ps3 so my opinion is valid..
Another thing, xbmc has been ported to linux, its in early beta but plays most things without a problem

@Ghoop - thanks for the info, all sounds great.
except I cant help thinking that, on the face of it, the mypvr unit does most of the same for a lot cheaper?? However I suspect there are some major differences that I havent picked up on?

@openmedia - great site, very informative. Would be great to have indicative pricing info on the options, but i guess thats what the resellers are for.
I spoke to your reseller, Axent out in New Lynn who were very helpful. Apparently they are awaiting their upgraded demo unit to come back from you guys, so hope to see that next week in person, ask a few questions, and maybe make a decision. I'm also in the market for a mid range amp and speakers, so sounds like I might be able to goto Axent and get the whole package sorted to all work together.

I'm guessing that I can get a Freeview over Sat card (via the Sky dish left by the previous owner?) for now, and once the drivers are working for the DTT then chuck one or 2 of those cards in to get Freeview HD.

@Ghoop

Is there somewhere in Auckland that has a model on display that I can have a play with as a comparison with the myPVR system?

cheers.

It has taken some tweaking (mainly in the server side) but I am now pretty happy with the PCH. When they release the firmware to support local HD broadcast audio, that will be my main video player.  Only other issue which is not of major concern to me is, it doesn't play audio that well - in fact not really at all using the swisscenter server. Something about not being able to stream the audio and video images (like album art) at the same time.

But for me the main purpose of a media player is for video - don't really want to turn on a big TV so I can play a MP3 track!

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
