I appreciate that lots of people prefer the low profile, minimal fuss and styling of a soundbar....but I have struggled to find one I liked the sound of - being a full HT kinda guy.

But I do wonder if something like these would be a a good low-cost middle option i.e. between a soundbar and a full Amp/HT/or Bookshelf set up:

Anyone tried these or similar?

I think I'm pulling the trigger on a pair of these today. Just sucks they have to come from oz can not find a local retailer that has these in stock. This is just to have some speakers at home mainly for music as I got rid of a far too large stereo for my needs left over from my early 20's haha. Due to our small house though they will be put next to the tv. Would love to use them for the tv too if I can..

I got a Sony CT-790 for ~$500, current version is the CT-800. Has multiple 3 HDMI in and an HDMI Out + analog in + optical in + USB/Wifi and Bluetooth.

And it sounds really nice. Also has the option to add wireless rear speakers later if you want.

I had to relocate my wifi AP for the wireless sub on my LG soundbar to stop dropping out all the time. Quite annoying they dont allow for a wired connection to it but I guess they are all about trying to make it easy for idiots to set up.

My house is a Wifi nuclear hotspot (2 x 802.11ac Wave APs and one 802.11b/g/n/as AP and 3 Rokus talking to their 2.4ghz remotes) and have no issues with my Sony wifi sub.

Mine was an old unifi LR sitting about 300mm from the sub that was bridging to another one that has a NVR on it so basically pushing out loads of data all the time - Moved it to about 2m away (other end of the enterdainment cabinet) and problems went away.

Are the subs on the Sony and LG's bluetooth or WiFi though?

I'd be interested if that was part of the issue. In my experience, bluetooth subs / products in general are the first to suffer when access points and routers are too close.

Bought those Edifier R1700BT speakers today. Might try them on the tv but that requires an optical to RCA adaptor, should be all good. Wanted to get the model up but that is above budget. Hopefully they get here soon. Can't wait to give them a whirl.

Fairly sure the Sony is BT as technotes state when the CT-790 is in BT Transmit mode you cannot use the sub (not a big issue as it is used for BT headphones and you wouldn't want the sub working when you do that).
