aucklander: One more thing, which I am sure is extremely relevant for my problem: in the tutorial, there is a screen where you go in "Direct Show..." settings, and do the most important bit: tick the EVR option. Well... I do not have the "Direct Show Filter Control" tab, which gives me the EVR option once expanded !!
Not sure if you're stilling experiencing this but I just came across the same issue..
Turns out there is a "switch to expert mode" at the top right (next to help) of the MediaPortal configuration program which will enable the 2 extra TV options and the Direct Show filter control
I only noticed this after installing one of the SVN updates
