Actually, it has been found that even though Blu-ray disks have a region code on the cover, most actually aren't region locked. This website keeps track of what's locked and what's not.

Off topic, but online radio and video streaming with geolocation restrictions, and content download restrictions in the gaming industry, is a giant step backwards, IMO.

It'll be our music CDs next... where they'll only be playable in certain regions.

You really think music CDs have a future?!

Perhaps not region coding on current music CD media, but it may be present in any advancement on the music media format. Music that is recorded by artists in the future, will be in a surround sound-like format? I don't know, I'm not in the industry.

I still prefer to buy the physical media, rather than digital downloads.

Music can already be purchased on discs in a surround sound format. They are SACD and DVD-Audio. As a owner of a player that can play that content and several discs, the quality difference between CD and DVD-Audio (which is uncompressed audio) is very clear and worth it. Plus it's 5.1 sound.

SACD's cannot be ripped but you can rip the red book audio track on them. DVD-Audio cannot be (easily) ripped but I understand folks did work out a hack. But you can rip the lossy tracks on them, either DD or DTS. Since DVD-Audio is basically a DVD format I guess they could impose region coding on them but what's the point? Music is designed to be released internationally/simultaneously and record companies would not want to inhibit distribution of their content.

Ahhh yes i used this website to pick my last 4 Blu-Ray buys from Amazon US..

$16NZ a Disc is all good in my books :)

I did have someone bring them back to NZ 4 me tho :)

Shouldnt that be 'They were...' both are just about dead arnt they (having a SACD and DVD-A player and about 8 disks total).

Not dead but in need of major resuscitation! I just picked up Brother in Arms (Dire Straits) in SACD 5.1 and it's amazing. There is no shortage of classical music on SACD and releases are occurring regularly. But perhaps one day they will all be replaced by BR since BR also has lossless 5.1 audio now.

Then no doubt they will be region locked just like BD movies are and you will have to pay $50 at Borders Books rather that $20 at Amazon..

I have a 60G PS3 (US) and anyway don't play the SACD's on it - play on a dedicated SACD/DVD-A player
