LG OLED can output Dolby Atmos (DD+) over ARC (so streaming Dolby Atmos format from Netflix etc.) but not TrueHD - this requires eARC, I belive.

This is what I initially believed, but I can't find anything definitive. I have therefore resolved that this will not be the deciding factor as to which OLED to go for. As long as there is a streaming box (Apple TV, Chromecast, etc) that I can connect to my AVR to do Atmos, the TV purchase will be all about the picture.

Maybe I'll email LG and all for a definitive answer, and get the answer in writing.

Saw the Panasonic FZ950 in JBs today. Maybe it was placebo, but it did look better than the EZ950 playing identical content right beside it.

Do you know if the FZ950 is using the same panel as the C8? One of the main reasons I got the C8 over the A8F was the newer panel.

LG are the only manufacturer of OLED panels. Panasonic/Sony etc all use OLED panels made by LG.

Yes, but I was wondering if Panasonic are using the latest generation panel that is in the C8. The Sony A8F, for example, is using last years panel (i.e. the same as the C7).

I'd suggest that the bigger issue affecting sound quality isn't which if the latest surround scapes/codecs we have installed but rather boring things like where the 5.1 speakers are, where the curtains are and issues linked to having our TV and speakers in lounges/living rooms rather than dedicated home theatre rooms...

i understand what you're saying but...

dolby digital plus does not include any of the audio objects that atmos introduced.

dolby atmos, on the other hand, is really about those audio objects and requires overhead/upfiring speakers to realise in the listening environment. atmos specifications adds the third digit to the number of channels designation of surround sound systems.

dolby digital: 5.1ch

dolby digital plus: 7.1 - discrete (not matrixed) left and right surround back channels added. technical spec allows for up to 15 channels, but i have not seen any in actual application

dolby atmos added audio objects and includes floor and overhead objects to realise the 3D space. for home theatre applications, the overhead objects can be served by up-firing speakers. the channel nomenclature gained another significant digit - it became 5.1.2, 7.1.4, etc.

now here is where the confusion is... for home theater applications, because of the limited bandwidth, e.g. hdmi interconnects, and processing power of consumer A/V receivers... the atmos objects are realised by adding a substream to the dolby truehd or dolby digital plus soundtrack... atmos objects from the original atmos mix that are close together are aggregated and sent to the appropriate (atmos) speaker.

so it really need not be called dolby digital plus with atmos enhancement. it is dolby atmos.
