I thought about it, but I'll continue monthly for now.

There's a long standing bug with the android version where it'll start playing an episode for ~1 second then stop. Restarting the episode works fine. It's been around since ~Feb and there's basically been zero acknowledgement from Plex regarding a fix..

Meanwhile they keep cranking out useless things no one wants like VR, Web things, podcasts etc.

My point is they seem quite happy to take peoples money but don't really reciprocate that with decent support.

I just wish there was an easy way to sync playback history between plex and emby, I know there's the likes of trakt.tv but its a bit of a hassle. I can never remember why I switch back from emby to plex.

what are some actual major downsides?

I would have thought this was the perfect use case for Trakt.  I initially used ot use it when kodi wasn't all that stable, and I had to keep redoing it.  Having watched history in trakt allowed it to be set back to what was watched etc.

I know the sync process on plex for trakt isn't too bad....but tbh I haven't upgraded that plugin for a long time to see if it's broken.

Have never switched, I've always used Emby, but a few thoughts -

A few things might be that apparently Plex is OK with random/unorganised media and Emby like its stuff organised - each Movie in its own movie folder, same for TV series etc.

Emby is apparently working on better live TV management, like having TV subchannels, (channels 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, etc), just general channel management. Not sure how good it is for audiobooks if you like that kind of stuff.

Live TV requires a subscription and people seem to get confused with their 15 device limit and having Premiere (the subscription) vs buying individual apps (I probably would get confused as well if I didn't have the lifetime sub thing).

They have announced that they are removing support for plugins. So I suspect Trakt won't work much longer.

But hey, for those using chromecasts the new version apparently includes the addition of an animated cast logo. So they are at least focusing on the things that matter.

I got sick of Plex resorting my "latest" every couple of months with the same 7 year old files.

Emby is much better, even if it does stick some random files in my library,

Maybe that's a sign to switch to emby now then so I can at least get my watch history from plex -> emby

Whatever will I do without my ability to watch Plex in a virtual plex environment if I switch to emby /s

I think they’re removing the plugins store. But I believe that written ones will still work. Of which my plugin and trait are in the unsupported store and should still work.

I haven't come across anything that is a deal breaker, there are just a lot of things that are a little bit different.

I would recommend trying for a month alongside Plex.

Emby is having a bit of a Cyber Monday thing - $100 instead of $120 lifetime (US$ of course). It helps (a bit).
