Sorry about the newbie questions but do you need to pay a subscription for Alexa on a compatible device like the Beam? Or is the app free to download and use.

Nope, you don't need to pay to use Alexa. You will need to set up an account (with Amazon), but don't have to subscribe to anything if you don't want to.

We have two Sonos home theatre set-ups. One is a Beam with two Play Ones and a Sub. I know some people here on GZ rubbish Sonos  but it works well and I love it. The Ones gives excellent sound for their size. A good thing about it is that we can use the setup for TV surround sound or for streaming music - it changes from one use to the other automatically depending on whether the TV is turned on. All controlled from an app on phone/tablet.

It’s not cheap - especially with the sub - but you don’t really need to have the sub. The Beam plus two Play Ones will give you the wireless rears you’re looking for - apart from mains power to each Play One. The Beam connects to TV via HDMI ARC (preferably) or fibre optic/Toslink cable. Beam supports Alexa - with Google Assistant coming I believe.
