Here is an article on Philips "Premium" OLED TV's to be released probably late 2019. These include Bowers & Wilkins speaker systems, and three sided Ambilight technology.

Provided that these Philips OLED TVs are of decent quality, that they have Amblight shouldn't be a reason not to get them (given one can just leave it turned off).

I'm certainly keen on seeing the 65" 804 model when (if?) it arrives here - here's a review of the 55" version. Given the 803 is currently $4k at PB Tech -making it (AFAIK) currently the cheapest 65" OLED - I'm hoping the 804 will be available here at a similar price at some point in the next 6-10 months. The 804 addresses the 803's lack of support for some of the HDR standards - apparently supports HDR10+, HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG HDR - which makes it much more of an all-rounded set.

In the end I'm not wealthy enough and/or too much of a cheapskate to spend an extra thousand or few to get the last few percentage of performance from a TV, and with OLEDs I imagine the differences between models are less than with LCD, given the common panels (and less variability than with LCDs - eg, variations in backlighting technology).

Actually, I'd rather put that money I saved towards a new receiver and Atmos speakers... That's also why I can't be bothered worrying about the new trend of providing or pairing up with fancy speakers - complete waste of money for those of us who use an external sound system.

Here's another more affordable Philips OLED. Just announced to everyone's surprise, as it hadn't been mentioned earlier in the year. It supports Dolby Vision/HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos just like the other models. Also has Ambilight. This may be the one to grab, instead of the more feature rich models.

Interesting to read; that said, I note these two cheaper models come with Philip's own 'smarts' rather than Android - would that potentially make its support (in terms of updates/improvements) shorter-lived than with an Android-based set?

Which reminds me I have a dumb question in relation to TVs running Android - does their built-in Google Assistant work in NZ? Or is it like the recent LGs, the WebOS of which ostensibly supports GA but is disabled in the settings?

10 years or so ago we had an ambilight tv.

It was amazing! 100% would buy again. There are third party solutions you can buy - dreamscreen and another whose name escapes me that have an hdmi passthrough and replicate the effect.

I'd buy again, and was actually a bit annoyed as we bought a lg oled in 2016, and I think it was the year after phillips came back. Would have bought one based on previous experience.

Ambilight - recommended. Makes your tv feel twice the size, and watching it in the dark way more immersive.
