Apple TV is still the gold standard for streaming boxes. I've got Android TV and ATV and it's not really close.

Your own choices may not make that an option but the ecosystem is significantly better that Android TV.

I prefer the flexibility of the Android eco system, and I am almost exclusively in the Android camp in our home (especially if you count Amazon), with the only IOS devices being Ipads required for educational purposes (Exclusive titles!).

With flexibility comes more bugs, and whilst annoying, being able to load whatever I want, however I want trumps it for me.

I can understand that somewhat for mobile devices but I don't think it doesn't make a great deal of sense for single use devices like streamers. For me it only has one purpose, playing content.

From an app perspective the only advantage of Android TV is Kodi. Everything else is available on Apple TV and it is much less locked down running apps from other countries.

Sideloading iPlayer is a total pain in the posterior for Android TV. For apple TV it's a much simpler and easier process.

Well, it's possible things may have changed, but I have yet to experience any situation where an Apple device is LESS locked down than an Android device. I haven't used a Apple TV for about 3 years, ultimately though, I don't really see much benefit of running a household of Android devices and one IOS device, especially since I own a lot of apps for Android, and I would have to buy them again with Apple. I use my Shield TV for more than consuming media, including some games, though I'll admit the other stuff does tend to be fairly minimal in comparison.

I see Apple TV has dropped a bit in price too, there was daylight between the Android Boxes I use like the FireTV and Shield TV, and the Apple TV last time I looked into one, though, honestly, budget doesn't really enter into the equation as much as flexibility. For example, unless I am mistaken, there isn't a way to get a third party remote with a keyboard on the back for Apple TV?

You can use a Bluetooth keyboard and harmony remotes work fine.

Being able to switch between apple accounts via a couple of clicks, and have multiple countries apps loaded simultaneously, for different countries is nice. Not being able to do the same on Android TV is dumb.

In the real world I see sweet FA between iOs and Android. I use both (Android phone, iPad) and it's pretty seamless these days. There are edge cases but at least Apple TV has a native photos app. That really annoys me with android tv - I use Google photos and there is no native way to display these on Android TV. We do this a lot and having to cast from a phone or use hanky 3rd party apps is dumb.

Android on TVs and tablets just suck, they don't get any investment and have basically been abandoned. Apple hasn't pumped a ton of investment into TvOs but it seems to get a heap more love than Android TV.

To be fair I find the Apple TV remote terrible. I don't know why it is so hard to get the UX right for this. Everyone seems to want a gimick rather than just a simple remote with a few buttons that are easy to use.

Couldnt disagree with this more. I hate the ATV, the remote is a pain to use. Ive had zero issues with my nvidia shield tv (I know some have, but not me).

I'll probably buy this soon after release, I need a another shield tv for a bedroom.

I personally find android tv the best streaming device out there. Or an xbox one if you have kids and want to set time restrictions.

Regarding the remote, I've never used/touched the official remote, I just use a harmony one remote, works perfectly.

Loved my Shield in 2016 - love it still.

It has great specs/performance, the UI is highly customisable, has had loads of updates and it has every single app i want and need - and there are a lot, it is stable and the ability to sideload is a must for someone like me who loves to tailor my devices.

So if my 2016 Shield died I would so be getting a new one.

Appreciate the ATV works for some - but not for me - ever.

And now, the worst kept secret in recent internet history, the new Shield TV and Pro.

Coming... uuhhhhh... soon? To a... uhhh ... country? Near you? I am guessing we are not a "select European country"?

So it looks like they have ditched the gaming edition and now just sell the controller separately.

Also looks like the new remote is backwards compatible with the old shield, so that's something I guess.

Works out to be about $375 NZD shipped though, so I think I will wait Christmas sales start. Or wait until it releases here.

Really though, if you either have the previous Shield or don't use DV, it's pretty much a non-starter.

Absolutely, but given this is around the price of the 2017 gaming edition shield locally ($368, was $329 on a recent special) which comes with the controller included, or the normal version is around $300, it feels a bit of paying more for less at it's launch price. I'd rather get the newer version for longer life-span and DV, but given that I could also do the same job currently with an ATV4K, I'm not prepared to pay that much of a difference over that GST or no.

Since I am happy enough with my LG's webOS apps for now, really I'm waiting to see what happens to the price coming closer to holidays; if it gets a local release, what the local rrp is (probably the same as above, but at least local support); or if the old one goes somewhat cheap enough to make it worth it.

I don't mind spending on this type of technology, but I am struggling to justify $375 over the 2017 version I already have.
