Personally speaking, I don't see that much value in having an integrated freeview tuner, but that's mostly because I'm using an HTPC which allows features such as (HD) recording; Timeshifting; and network streaming.  An integrated tuner would just be a waste of money as I would never use it.

It's that thing about future proofing but you don't know what the future will hold.  Freeview will become the only method of TV broadcast in New Zealand eventually, but by then you may be buying another TV.  I think an integrated Tuner is a good idea, but price will come into it.  You can get an external freeview box if you want for $300 but it's yet another box and I like the idea of being able to turn on just the TV only sometimes.

I don't think screen resolutions will go up much in the next few years above 1080, so just make sure you get a full HD set if you can afford it.  The main move seems to be towards how we get our movie content, either by bluray disc or via downloads, but the resolution should hold for a bit.

As for LCD vs Plasma etc, take the advice that's offered but don't ever overlook the importance of going and having a look where you can.  Some brands deserve their public opinion place, but others just have good marketing/advertising.  It's your money and what looks best TO YOU is what's most important.

I had a look at DS Power House yesterday and luckily they had the Panasonic TH50PY800 and the Sony 46" V series LCD right besides each other running the Freeview demo. Even then I thought that the colours on the Panasonic Plasma were more natural looking than on a LCD screen. But what clinched it then for me was when I saw a scene from a soccer game which looked much much better on the Plasma. So at least I have now decided on the Panasonic Plasma. Now I have to decide whether the 42" or 50" with/without integrated tuner.

But that's now a question I have to ask of my wallet.

Go large, we are stoked with our 50PY800, and at retail there is about $600 difference between inbuilt tuner and not, who cares about one more box in the cabinet if you buy it separately. If you get a 42" you will always wonder - should I've got the bigger one?

I use a PC for Freeview HD but also have the Sony KDL40W4000 IDTV. All I can say is it is great when I update the PC and something goes wrong, I can flick the sony into Picture in Picture and work on the PC while the wife watches Freeview HD from the builtin tuner. Plus we only have two remotes....MCE keyboard and sony remote. fan...bloody..tastic.
I thought I would never use the IDTV either but it has some serious WAF, so the wife is happy and that is all that matters. well that's what I make her think. Innocent

Oh yes you will see the value if you have a family.  I bought a universal remote to try and overcome the remote clutter and "which botton to I push for Sky / Freeview"   and to make it easier for the family to watch via Freeview STB. I for one would gladly trade my existing 46' TV for one with an integrated DTT tuner..

You have a very stong point there.  I guess I'm lucky because my partner normally lets me mess with my setup without much complaint.

But I will say that I ended up keeping Sky (basic package) so she didn't loose MTV; Box and a couple of other crap channels I would never personally bother to watch.  In fact when I told her I was about to dump Sky, she looked so sad I changed my mind and just downgraded instead (dumped movies; sport).

One thing I will say is that my partner is a quick learner.  She has never had a problem figuring out how to change AV channels; Amp inputs or work/control mediaportal (I do have a learning remote which has reduced the clutter somewhat).

ps. it's not all good -ie. when I turn my back for a moment and find she's switched to Sky/MTV

I did exactly the same thing austriaco! I went into the store to buy a Samsung or Sony 40" LCD and came out with 50" Panasonic Plasma PY800. The reason I went bigger apart from the size was the Panasonic price. To me $1000 extra for a latest 50" over the 42" was worth it. Now it's at home...I'm more than happy I got the 50". Initially I was abit worried it might have been too big for my small lounge. But it fits snug as bug. Next time I'll get a 65"...LOL Cool

The Pana PZ850s (50 and 42) with built in DTT tuners have been around for 1 month and one week respectively and they are already being offered for $700-800 below RRP at a local (Auckland) retailers.  Unless you are looking at a super sharp price on the PY800 (which is on runout) would it not be prudent to go for the latest.  I have yet to get a satisfactory explaination for what the 480Hz on the Pana is supposed to achieve.
Incidentally, I didn't realise until I saw round the back of the TH-42PZ850 that it had Optical Digital Audio out.
I am already sizing up to move the 42PV70 into the family room to make space for a 50PZ850.......

Anyhow dragging back towards the thread, Yes you want freeview, and preferably inbuilt (to avoid IR remote hell).
