Yep but I'd assume a lot of people (based on the number of this sort of thread posted online) using soundbar are going direct from TV to bar for the sake of simplicity and then facing the incompatibility issue.

Fair enough I agree with you. When we purchased a TV, We didn't think that eARC was going to be that important because of all the reviewers saying that you only need that for games. Which I learned the hard way. We spent close to five grand on a 65-in OLED(gz1000), but wasn't prepared to upgrade the whole TV just to get eARC. Upgrading just the sound system which had eARC and Dolby Vision made sense.

The HDMI switch is the best option IMHO especially if it has an IR remote. Or is that too technically challenging for people? The so long as the soundbar supports Atmos/DTS:X and 4K (HDR) then you don't care what audio format the TV supports or can it send the signal back via eARC.

I do own a soundbar and it wasnt delivering the surround effect that i wanted. And ive replaced it with a yamaha rxv 685 with atmos and extremely happy with the full dome of sound.

It has everything that your looking for!

I have a receiver with Atmos and a PJ in my main room but for the family room wanted something more discreet. Anyway as I posted, the problem was user error :-(

And Samsung support just told me the soundbar only supports Dolby Digital and yet for me it plays DD, DD+ and DD TrueHD, Atmos, DTS:X

I guess most consumers don't care or understand so long as there is decent audio coming out.

Is it really playing all the lossless codecs or just the cores ?

To answer an earlier question, DD+ Atmos is on zero discs, it's a format used on streaming TV like Netflix.

The simplest info to this TrueHD and Atmos is, the Dolby Atmos a layer of metadata added to either a TrueHD or Dolby Digital Plus audio track.
The metadata takes the digital audio and steers “objects” within the audio track, localising certain effects within the soundscape with better accuracy in positioning.

For exmample....imagine a helicopter flying overhead scene.
A TrueHD track alone will do its best to simulate the feeling of that helicopter flying from behind and over top, but it is limited by the number of channels available, phasing and etc.
Because Atmos can add height channels, it can steer those effects overhead, in addition to what can be done with reversing polarity and such.

In addition, it can place objects within the soundfield without being tied to a specific channel.

To be in easier understanding (so far that I understand)

Dolby TrueHD is the delivering source of the sound.
+ Dolby Digital sound you get from DVDs, some Blu-ray Discs, cable, satellite and streaming services comes in lossy source, some streaming services deliver the sound in lossy Dolby Digital Plus.
+ For most of the Blu-ray and 4K Blur-ray discs, the sound comes in "lossless" TrueHD source.

When it comes to Atmos
+ All of the streaming services such as Vudu, iTunes, Netflix and Amazon delivers Atmos in lossy Dolby Digital Plus.
+ Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray Discs, it comes in TrueHD.

So technically there’s no difference between TrueHD and Atmos.
Dolby Atmos can be delivered in TrueHD and lossy source.

The core audio track with TrueHD is basic AC-3 and that cannot carry Atmos metadata. So if the Soundbar display shows Atmos, then it's decoding TrueHD audio.
