I'm with the others; if you really need a new receiver, you are better trying to get a deal on a 2018/2019 receiver at the moment. With all (down this end of the market anyway) announced 2020 receivers only featuring 1 HDMI 2.1 capable input, they really are not worth paying a huge (or any) premium over them, and that's when we eventually see them. It will be interesting to see if anything from the Onkyo stable turns up with more, same with Yamaha, but really unless you are prepared to pay the early-adopter tax, I'd be Joe Biden my time to see what happens next cycle. It really only matters for gamers or 8k early adopters anyway, which in either case you are better syndicating devices on the TV end.

That might be easy said than done though, given current events. Additionally, I have heard from my local shop that there has been a shift around in management with the suppliers for Marantz/Denon (is that Soundgroup?) in NZ, and they are apparently shifting their sales strategies to stop 'diluting the brands', which I'm guessing is code for control the supply and dis-incentivize slash-and-burn sale prices. I don't know how much fact there is to that, but either way, the prices have shot up, and it doesn't seem like there will be much incentive for them to come down anytime soon.

I had been keeping an eye on the Denon X3600H myself, which had been hovering around the $2k mark previously. For me, that was the sweet spot for good features (11.2 channel processing w/ pre-outs, good room correction, measures well for a receiver) for the price, since I'd rather delegate most/all amp duties to external units. Oh well, keep on Biden.

If you do end up going with a 2020 Denon, make sure you compare the feature-set between the S960H and X2700H closely, as the former is from their lower end range and may be missing a few choice things; pre-outs for one.

Since we are here as well, Marantz has announced their 2020 SR range, but its the same story as Denon naturally, one 2.1 input.

You are probably right.

All I need is Dolby Vision/HDR10 pass through, and Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatibility, and most of the 2019 range already have earc on board, or can be upgraded with a firmware update. But I don't use my TV's onboard apps, my Apple TV 4K covers that. So, why should I care about earc 😂

I'm also not a gamer anymore, so HDMI 2.1 is no use to me.

Only thing missing would be HDR10+ support, but that seems to be dead in the water. I have only two discs that have HDR10+ and no Dolby Vision (Bohemian Rhapsody and X-Men: Dark Phoenix). All of my other discs with HDR10+ available, also have Dolby Vision.

To tell the truth, I probably don't need to upgrade. I have the Yamaha RX-A660, which has everything I need except Dolby Vision pass through. Its just that, I like to have a new toy every two or three years, be it a TV, receiver, player or speakers. I have a new Panasonic OLED TV, and new Panasonic UB820 4K player, so that just leaves me with new speakers or receiver 😂

Well, that's the crux of it I guess; if you only use external media players routed through your AVR and don't plan on getting a HDMI 2.1 equipped TV anytime soon, then both HDMI2.1 inputs and eARC (which itself is part of the HDMI 2.1 spec) is superfluous. In saying that, I probably wouldn't buy an AVR now without at least eARC support now though, given how long-lived they can be (and like DV support, you would have to try hard to get one that doesn't support it).

Yeah, it looks like Panasonic is the only one left on the HDR10+ bus for physical media with Samsung departing. Given that only Amazon seems interested in streaming HDR10+ content and the majority of the market will just use on-board TV apps, I can't see AVR manufacturers rushing to support it. DV has all but won the standards war there, really.

I would imagine your UB820 does a pretty good job with HDR10 content anyway. At least between that guy and your TV you can watch DV/HDR10+ content with the double HDMI outputs on the player. Streaming DV is hit-and-miss, really.

I feel your pain; I'm a chronic upgrade-er, but all things considered, I would cool your jets until the next cycle for an AVR. So that leaves... speakers!

Yes, I have my UB820 hooked up to the TV for Dolby Vision/HDR10+, with the audio plugged into my receiver. Apple TV is connected to my receiver, so I can't get Dolby Vision , but HDR10 and Atmos are okay for now.

The UB820 has an HDR optimizer for HDR10, but not sure that it makes a lot of difference, if any. A bit like HDR10+ really.

My friend just bought the B & W 600 series speakers with dual subs. 603's at the front, HTM6 Centre, 606 rears and a pair of CCM683 ceiling speakers. Subs are B &W ASW610's. I am jealous 😂

Back on topic. When I do upgrade my receiver, I think that it will be one of the new Denon's. Unless Yamaha come up with something amazing.

A slight correction.

Denon and Marantz have moved from B&W (who have a shop front called Online Hifi in Chch) to Westan.

I don't know if B&W have another electronics brand on the way or not?

Westan are an Aussie company, but have an office based in Auckland.

Sound Group do Yamaha.

My friend bought his setup from Online Hi-Fi in Christchurch (we went to the store) and they had lots of Denon AVR-X4500H and also the X-6500H model. I didn't take much notice if they had any other models. The ones that I saw were stacked near the entrance/exit.

A week or so? Or longer

I have a friend in Christchurch who will be very interested?

About three weeks ago. Because he was buying a set of speakers from them, he got a great deal on the X4500H.
