And another Apple and Plex user here. Works great and my mates shared his server to me and that works great over it too.

gehenna:

Does "not supported" mean they're removing it from the TV, or just won't be updating it past this point?  ATV works perfectly fine, as does any of the usual Android TV boxes such as Nvidia Shield or Mi Box.  Even the super cheap Amazon Fire TV Stick works fine, albeit a little laggy to navigate sometimes.

Here is what they sent me.

On September 30, 2020 we will be ending support for the Plex app on some older smart TVs (some Vizio, LG, and Hisense models). These devices are unable to use modern, secure connections when communicating with our services. You're receiving this email because we show that you've recently used a Plex app that might be affected by this change.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we encourage you to upgrade your Plex experience with one of several updated and affordable devices such as Google Chromecast, Roku Express, or Amazon Fire TV Stick.

Thanks,
The Plex Team

I think they will cut it off all together as they are talking about modern  / secure connections.

I do have an android but but it is laggy. ( I have not tired the shield or mi box ) but they would have to be very easy to use to be a contender.

John

These topics roam OT so easily but I will add my experience in that I run Plex on Kodi on an Odroid C2. Server is Windows. The C2 is powerful enough to decode Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD MA and pass Atmos metadata and can also play 4k content. And it only cost me about $70 or so if I recall. The C2 does have an onboard IR receiver which I think is in the Harmony Database but I just have a cheap IR keyboard I got from AliExpress and use that to control Kodi and Plex via IR.

Interestingly the Plex client on Kodi is free but it's not free on Android - you need a Plex pass.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Depending on your sound needs Infuse (app on apple tv) can be worth a look as then you get HD audio pass through as PCM. It's not free though. If you just need dolby audio the plex apple tv app is fine

+1 for Infuse, I have used it for over a year or so now and best app I ever put on our apple tv.
Costs something like $6 a year or something for continued updates.
