I have seen them in Applicance Shed for $2,400 and at the weekend Farmer's had them for $2,299. i don't think that is the model with Freeview.

These should be getting pretty cheap now as the LA46A650D become more prevalent (the IDTV version) and now the Series 7's are out now as well.......

In the US Series 9 was released in August. The main difference seems to be that individual pixels can be switched off, so they will be really really black, solving the LCD blackness problem. Looks like Series 8 was very short-lived.
Samsung NZ obviously needs to get rid of all the older technology and hasn't even released Series 7 here, although that's only a small step up from Series 6 - or so I understand. Has a sub-woofer built in, which makes it less necessary to drive the sound through your hifi system.

I am saving up for the LA40A650 too, but have concerns over the extreme sharpness level.
The shops won't let you play around with the settings - that would be the only way to find out whether the setting/backlight or so can be adjusted to make the picture smoother. Which seems a joke, considering you spent a bucket of money for something and they won't let you test drive it.

Does anyone know if the settings can be manipulated to make the picture more realistic, less 'in-your-face'?
I want a crisp but real picture - not an over-sharpened, over-coloured cartoon effect.

I think you can dull it slightly. And I figure if I'm dropping $4k in a store then I damn well going to play with it. The shops tend to have it on the dynamic setting and brightness all the way up - which tends to ws it out slightly.

I'm going to take my popcorn hour loaded up with stuff to have a toodle...

I have a LAxxA650D myself, they have plenty of controls to dial things just nicely. Although you need a decent light probe and gear to adjust the advanced controls correctly.

That's cool! Thanks very much for advice and settings.

I went to Stereoworld in receivership on Friday and almost bought the LA40A650 for $2100.
They had only two left then. Got a Panasonic player DVD S 54 for $105 instead.
Shame they are gone now. Looks like JB Hi-Fi now for any bargains.

With respect, using someone elses setting generally just makes the display look different.

Every unit will vary atleast 10% from factory, let alone per batch or age from use.

Not one of those figures matches measurements I have made from several of these displays, nor do I expect them to be the same.

Atleast grab yourself a calibration DVD to do the basics.

Good sales pitch.

Batch numbers are generally cut from the same panel. 10% is very much on the extreme side from one batch to another. The settings are average so very much usable compared to the default factory settings.

Just a quick update to say that DSE and Harvey Norman are selling the LA40650D (intergrated freeview version of LA650) below $2500 at the moment - not a bad bargain IMHO.

I and a friend both bought one today ($2480 at HN) - personally I would have preferred to buy from Noel Leeming but my contact there simply couldn't match the price (they have then at retail of $3299 I think it was).
