That may mean The Warehouse has dropped them. There are heavy discounts on Sony TVs there until "Offer ends 27/04/2021". I get the impression TWH only stocked them to lend credibility to those Veon horrors.

"I spoke with Panasonic which said the JX700 (40inch) is landing the end of april and will be in stores, likely the first week of May. Rrp was either $ 1300 or 1400 ( i forget exactly which price)"
TV introductory prices are high. The HX700 40" is under $800 on clearance right now.

"Bright Panel" seems to mostly be a thing which their marketing department more or less used to describe IPS panels. I'd take it with a grain of salt.

Generally people react better to bright, reflective LCD screens in shops. This a long standing thing with reflective LCDs displacing matte on laptops in the late 2000s.

@jonathan18 I wish I could be more helpful, but there really isn't any notable standouts when it comes to picture quality above what has been mentioned. They are overwhelmingly low contrast IPS 60hz panels with either no local dimming or edge/frame.

You are as familiar with the pitfalls of IPS panels with crappy LD as I am, so depending on how fussy she is, others like the Sony X8000H might work for her.

Actually, the 55" Samsung TU8000 for $1349 is another VA panel equipped model with half decent contrast, but with poor brightness. It will probably be quite similar to the HX700, but at least there is a review of it available from rtings.

I have been looking at hx700 and x8000h but in 65"+ range.
Don't use the TV in a bright room, off angle viewing is not needed and I don't have HDR content so was thinking VA. Also use a NUC rather than TV OS.
Which one might be better for me?

in 65" the HX700 is VA and the X8000H is IPS so the HX700 will have much better contrast.

The Sony 65" X9000H has a direct lit full array local dimming VA panel with 100Hz motion so would be a step up but it costs around $400 more.

If you can't stomach the price different you could also look at what discount you could get on the Panasonic 75hx900z. It doesn't have FALD but has a 100Hz panel, some kind of dimming and build reliability should be better than Samsung's.

Turn overscan off on whichever model you get as 1080 sources will be degraded if you don't.

75" was wishful thinking, the space is just not wide enough, will have to be a 65" or 70"
I believe only LG and Sony sold 4k 70" TVs in NZ and I'd have to buy used.

I have the 65HX700. I like it. It's not perfect though. You might need to leave the backlight dimming on to at least 'low' to avoid washed out blacks, e.g. with video content with black bars. Turning the backlight down or turning on Eco mode helps with the black levels I found. Supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Just my $0.02 and YMMV.

The 70X850B is 1080p and was manufactured 7 years ago which is to be taken into consideration. The 70X8300F is newer.

I don't think you're likely to see a 70X8300F come up on trademe and most trademe sellers are deluded about values when not selling a bottom end model.

70x850b did not know it was 1080p and that old, not keen
70w850b newer but also 1080p, I want 4k
70x8300f have not seen this one on tm
70x6700e have not seen this one on tm

Sorry the 70X8500B (NZ model) is 4k, I must have read the wrong page. Working smart apps may be lacking on a TV of that age so factor in a device along with reduced remaining lifespan of the TV. I saw one for sale used but they were asking too much imo.

Going by their website Sony is bringing 50" and 43" models to New Zealand this year.

There is a 50" X90J unlike last year's X9000H where they dropped the 50". This may be because Panasonic looks to be releasing a 48" OLED.

According to Rtings the 50" X80J has a VA panel.

The JX700Z is a Fauxasonic like the JX600Z as it has "Made in China" on its box.

According to news reports Panasonic is negotiating to outsource "low and medium end" TV production to TCL which likely means rebadging. There are higher positioned 100Hz panel real Panasonic LCDs for 2021 but I'd guess this year or next could be their last if they don't sell well. I presume they'll follow Philips' path in selling off the TV brand's licence in a few years if OLEDs are no long profitable.

Panasonic appears to be placing a bet on putting better speakers in their real models this year. With luck this may include the ones coming to NZ.
