I paid around $200 recently, just before it went up back then..... in last few years they've had about 3 large price hikes.

Anyone want to buy my lifetime pass for $749NZD? Its a fantastic deal :D
Second hand Plex Pass market about to be insane.

They’ve also had a couple of rounds of layoffs. If I had to guess I’d say they are on the edge of bankruptcy.
Or wanting to IPO. Or just make themselves more attractive to some VCs.
They’ve taken $132m of VC money over the years. I’m not sure their valuation would be that attractive. They’ve got a decent and loyal user base but they will always be a potential litigation target which suppresses the value of the company.
Fairly sure I paid ~$79 about 5 or 6 years ago which I considered insane value at the time. If they folded now I would still say I got value for money out of it. But yeah, at $749 I'd be looking at alternatives.

I paid US$75 in 2013. It owes me nothing.
I'm expecting sooner or later to lose that grandfathered plex pass. If the company isn't sustainable the way it is they will have to change something. At that point I'd probably suffer through Jellyfin, which is fine for me but not as great for non-tech family.
Current monthly subscription price at USD$6.99/month works out at USD$83.88/year, so $749 isn't THAT insane in comparison.

IMHO that depends on your definition of insane.

I think it serves it purpose. Stops the buying on lifetime passes in favour of monthly revenue.

I would revise that to:
Stops the buying [of] lifetime passes in favour of monthly revenue [but also risks monthly revenue by pushing people to other platforms].
I guess time will tell.

Even at the newly increase price, there's still a value proposition that works for some users. If you see yourself using it for an extended period of time the numbers potentially stack up.
I've been a Plex user for a very long time and have had Lifetime for nearly a decade.
As for Jellyfin/Emby being alternatives.. maybe for local playback, but that's not why most people run Plex.

Emby works fine for me playing from BOP to Nelson.

Always remember: ... 749 US$ for the remaining lifetime of Plex, not your lifetime. 😁

Jellyfin works fine remotely, in my experience.
