hamisht: my brother in law has the 606, and we we try hooking up my laptop (DV51009tx) via HDMI out, we can never get 7.1, only stereo, even though i can get 7.1 automatically on my 605.

What does the 606 handshake via hdmi with the laptop as?  I know I had to manually set my HTPC to stop it auto-setting to 1080i instead of 1080p pass-through.  Maybe the setup does the same for audioUndecided.

it automatically goes to 1080p if its connected to a 1080p tv through the amp. on the 605, once connected, you go into the sound control panel of the laptop and it says '7.1'. but on the 606, it just says 'stereo'.

its a real bugger of a thing, dont know why the later model doesnt detect the 7.1. we tried switching through all audio modes of the amp, but nothing worked.

I had a similar problem with my Blu-Ray player via my 606 to my TV.  With the amp set to pass-thru for 1080p video, the blu-ray player was 'seeing' the TV audio components (despite the amp being set to doing the audio) and wouldn't send anything higher than dolby digital.  Once I broke the link between the TV and Blu-Ray I could get Tru-HD and DTS(MA).
While your setup isn't exactly the same I wonder if the laptop is 'seeing' the TV and setting its output for what it believes the TV wants.  The wonders of hdmi CEC.
