Yeah but the whole point of dual tuner is so that you can record which you can't really do without an EPG.

You could give this a try for your EPG, it works with MediaPortal, GB-PVR and DVBViewer: http://mentalindustries.orconhosting.net.nz/epg.html

Eh? I don't have one now and I record just fine. I haven't looked into the software capabilities too much yet, but are you saying none of these whizzing front-ends can handle a basic timer-record setting??Surprised

That would....astound.....me. Guess I'm guilty of makng an assumption here.....

You can do it the old fashioned way, but why make things hard on yourself and not take full advantage of your new HTPC?

* My partner watches the show "Border Security", previously it was on TV1 on Mondays at 7:30pm (I think!), but a couple of weeks ago got moved to 11:30pm on a Friday night. I had no idea that it had moved, but because I had a rule in 4TheRecord to record anything on TV1 with "Border Security" in the name it just adjusted for me and continued recording it.

* When there's last minute changes to the schedule (and they publish it to the EPG obviously) you won't miss the recording

* Being able to quickly see what's on other channels

* A feature that's being added to 4TheRecord & already exists in MythTV - what new shows have been added to the guide this week

* I have 4TheRecord (with the MediaPortal tv server) record the ASB business news each morning, but I only have it keep the last 2 episodes for me

* With 4TheRecord you can have it make suggestions for you based on keywords in the show title and description, for example "zoo" or "animals" or an actor's name

Ya ya don't get me wrong - I'm not saying I think EPG's are worthless, or that I won't look into it, I'm just saying I'm not going to stick a satellite on my roof just for that purpose.

I still need to look into the whole area of which front end to use and EPG's etc, however at the moment I'm focusing on getting my hardware sorted. For that, this forum has been fantastic (have taken up the offer of the 2200).

Thanks all......I'll be back with more annoying questions shortly ;)

smac: Or any aftermarket IR receiver.....?

i should have said "MCE compatible"..  the hauppaue cards that come with remotes that plug in (like the Nova-S) are not necessarily MCE compatible.  The hauppauge MCE kit works fine, as do the remotes that come with cases such as the itrans kit with the zalman.

Which Turner would you recommened for a PCI slot? HAUPPAUGE WINTV HVR1300 ?
I want analogue input as well.
Also Im using a shuttle pc so the agp slot is next to the pci slot, is that going to cause any problems?

I think if your don't have a PCI-e system then you can forget about FreeviewHD. Some might disagree with me?

thats probably a fair call mcraenz. its hard enough with the right hardware.... better to stick to DVB-S for older PCs. Hauppauge Nova-S-Plus should fit the bill.

I have a new pci-e based system too, which I want to leave for gaming.

Its just I have an old shuttle SB75G2 sitting there that I don't want to waste. I guess the main focus now is to record programs from the telstraclear decoder.

I was thinking of getting the HVR1300 to future proof myself thats all. Like if the shuttle dies then I put the tuner card into another system.

Would the HVR1300 do the job or am I better off getting say the HVR3000/4000

the hvr3000/4000 add DVB-S functionality to the tuner - unless you need a hybrid card, i wouldnt bother. you may want to get a hybrid card now though, use it for DVB-S on the shuttle and then use it for DVB-T (and maybe for grabbing EIT guide data off the sat) when you upgrade later.

DJKXML works well for grabbing EPG data. It scrapes from various websites, so no need to get a satellite connection set up. Download and get info here: http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Utility/Djkxml

Have used it for ages, it's reliable and Dave updates it whenever something goes wrong!
