Not sure what you mean by the feed not being DVB-T specific? It lets me pick the channels I want, and I only choose the UHF freeview ones. Job done. Don't have a satelite dish (hence the need for an xml EPG) and I don't have sky.

OK renaming might have got me around having to jiggle the MC config, but I'd much rather do that in the MC GUI than in BSE. I haven't done a thing in BSE other than tell it where my xml file sits, and schedule it to run once a day about an hour after the xml update is scheduled.

I mean they are not freeview specific in that the callsigns, displaynames, and any channel numbers provided in the XML are normally generic terms devs have decided to use or channel numbers are sky related and not Freeview specific.

With the right callsigns, displaynames and channel numbers from the XML, no changes need to be made in BSE and Media Center map the EPG to the channel automatically. At least that is how it has worked for me after I setup a XML mod script to change those details.

cheers

Thanks for posting the screenshot smac.

I still don't get it. What on earth is a Call Sign?

Smac's screenshot shows his callsign is TV1, as is the Display Name, yet in 7MC the channel is TV ONE, so where is the matching occurring? Where did he say TV1 = TV ONE ?

That's the bit I'm doing in the media centre, cause I can't be bothered shagging about in BSE. Check Mike's instructions for editing the listings on the previous page of this thread. When you go in there you basically get to choose which of the channels MC has found in the xml to match up with each scanned channel that MC has found. I've also confirmed the matching 'sticks' after an EPG update (presumably unless the channel name changed in the XML).

In my case, all but three were correct anyway. What xml are you using?

Hooray!

Thanks smac and thanks Mike, doing the Edit Listings bit for each channel solved it. So now we have EPG, until BSE expires in November

Just to add my 2 pence worth. I use revens XMLTVNZ grabber with the latest BSE and it worked except for channels 1, 6,7 like Mattboy. I use the latest donation based XMLTVNZ too.

I had this same problem - worked out that I had to edit the channel in Media Center itself and change the 'source'. Easiest way to find out which source to use is if you've loaded channel logo's with BSE you'll see them when choosing that channels source.

Thats all off the top of my head - I'll double check it tonight when I'm home.

I saw above in the thread the question "whats a call sign?". I thought I'd try and give a bit of taxonomy

Program - a unique piece of content (e.g. a specific episode of Lost)
Service - a stream of content (e.g. Tv1, or the "Home Shopping Network")
Airing - describes when a Program will be transmitted on the Service
Channel - very similar to Service. In fact for the purposes of this, lets just call it the same thing
Call Sign - Its an abbreviation of the service name that public knows the service by. (e.g. HSN for home shopping network) . In the program guide, there isnt space for the service name, and just the call sign is shown. In NZ, I cant think of any cases where the service name, e.g. TV1, is different from the callsign (unless someone tells me that their official name is really "Television One" or something like that)

An interesting aspect is that for the old PAL (analog) signals, the tuner tunes to a specific frequency and decodes the service.  However, for DVB (i.e. digital) signals, the tuner tunes to a specific frequency and then starts getting 1's and 0's. The capacity of 1's & 0's that can be sent is so great that multiple services can be encoded and sent on the same frequency (or the terminology for this is... multiple services can be encoded and sent on the same transport stream). This leads to the fact that a single digital tuner can record multiple services (aka channels) at the same time. That is, as long as the services in question, are all being broadcast on the same transport stream.

To pre-empt the criticism, Windows Media Center doesnt support this (sad) and you'd need two tuners, even if the two services are in fact broadcast on the same transport stream. It would be a nice feature if added.

It certainly would be a nice feature, if added. Do you know whether this feature is being looked at for a Windows 7 Service Release or future version of Windows?

While I'm asking questions...
I note that dvblogic are already working on tuner pooling, and perhaps in a future release will support multiple virtual tuners per transponder. Anything from Microsoft in the area of tuner pooling?

Sorry I cant comment on future planning (typically I'll say something and the plans will change and I would have mislead you).

By DVBLogic's Tuner pooling, do you mean the ability to have your DVB tuners on the network appear as local to the machine? (Another provider of this is SiliconDust and their HDHomeRun standalone unit)

For the idea of having multiple virtual tuners per transponder frequency (i.e. transport stream). If the tuner was specific for that frequency (i.e. only reported as providing those services in that transport stream), it would work, but you'd be limitied to tying one tuner to each transport stream and Media Center only supports 4 tuners. So youd likely require too many tuners for it to be a workable solution.

If you had each tuner just proffer itself as, say, 3 virtual tuners. It still wouldnt work very well. The PVR scheduler will assume that the 3 virtual tuners could all be tuned to different transport streams. Most of the time the scheduled use of the tuners will result in trying to tune the tuner onto a different transport stream while in use. Assuming the DVBLogic virtualization reported an erorr back on the tune request, the PVR would fall back and try to use a different tuner. But the experience for the user would be poor (they'd get failed recording messages, the scheduler might not report any conflicts when in reality its impossible to acquire the content with the physical tuners that you have).

Interesting idea though. Let me know if I've misunderstood your idea.
