just been for a look at magness benrose, jbhifi and noel leemings on North Shore

NL was the cheapest. They would do a 50" s10 for $2250 and a 42" g10 for $2000, Im stuck between the two

Supposedly, the G10's can do 1080/24p without any noticeable judder. Colleague of mine has a PZ850, and said he can see judder with 1080/24p (blu-ray) content.

Perhaps robjg63 could comment on the 1080/24p performance?

Plasma SD performance is apparently not so flash. Although, I didn't think it was that bad watching our friend's "old" 1024x768 Pana TV. Colours even on that older model were just so natural I thought.

IMHO SD performance is superior on a Plasma than a LCD.

The g10 does have slightly better picture, not that it's easy to tell in a store... but I believe bigger is always better especially when it's 8 inches more.
Personally I'd just go for the 50" g10 though :P

Just FYI most stores don't tend to carry stock of 50" + tvs they take up way too much room out back and obviously don't get bought as much. Even big format stores like JB and noel leeming might only have 1 or 2.
That free wii is a panasonic promotion, every full hd plasma has a free wii by redemption til december the 4th from memory.
So if the 50s10 sounds like a bit of you pick your favourite store get them to price match $2250 and then enjoy your 1-4 week wait.

Sorry - Dont know about the 1080/24 - havent got a blu-ray player yet. Home theatre is next on the list. I thought I had seen comments that judder may still be present at that rate - though its hard to tell - there seem to be different variants of the G10 series in different parts of the world with different features. For example the G10 has the Viera link internet connection in some markets and THX settings - but we dont see that here on the G10.

I only have the Freeview HD/SD channels to compare - The SD picture still looks pretty good to me - obviously though, HD is still the stand out.

It does have a very nice picture though. I reckon its improved and got richer in the month or two that we have had it - either that or my fiddling with the colour settings have improved it out of the box

anyone had issues with screen defects? anything serious? what's the (return) policy from the stores?

been looking at X10/S10/G10 for a while now, price here are still a bit high. G11 has surfaced on some overseas market (around Sep 2009 i think) as well.

oh and why is G10 power consumption over 100W more than the S10? i thought the NeoPDP used in G10 claims to save power by 50% compare to conventional plasma.

Certain panning shots will produce notable judder on any display at this framerate. Hence the screens now coming out with 50Hz/100Hz/200Hz frame interpolation to assist with this.

I'd say it's still relevant. TV's quoting 100Hz, 200Hz, Motionplus whatever are doing motion interpolation which smoothes out judder effects that you notice mostly in fast pans. That is, they are actually creating new frames from the existing ones and inserting them inbetween effectively increasing the frame rate.

It really doesn't matter whether the TV is a plasma or not, you just need to weigh up whether you want this feature or not. Personally I like the effect on documentary films but for movies it kind of ruins the cinematic feel. Then again each company has their own technology and I've only really been exposed to Samsung's implementation of it.

Dont know if this helps (it says its about LCD panels - but same thing with plasma)

My G10 50" has 2 dead pixels - really hard to see - They only show up under some colour conditions. Thats what you get for running a pixel burn in slideshow and staring to closely at the screen.
Not worth sending it back for. I think Panasonic say that owing to the nature of the panels there may be 'some' dead pixels and that it is normal - so if I complained and got a new one there may be more than 2 dead pixels.

Ignore the power consumption - it will drive you crazy for a couple of bucks a year. Considering what you will pay for the TV its not that important. Turn off some lights to make up for it! EDIT: Actually I think I saw somewhere that they use rather loose standards when calculating the power consumption anyway - and Plasma always looks worse than it is - The figure is something like the theoretical maximum power if the panel is turned up to full brightness (which you would never do). I imagine that the newer panels 'can' go brighter than the old ones hence the increased power consumption - under normal use they do tend to use less than the old panels :END EDIT

Also - you will drive yourself crazy looking/waiting for new models and price changes. The G10 and S10 are both really good and the prices are pretty low now. There is a V10 new to the market that is pricey - some people have said its not worth the extra - some say it is. If you are like most of us and looking for the best deal on a full HD go with S10 - if you have a couple of extra dollars maybe the G10. Honestly not much between them for most eyes. I dont reckon you can go too wrong.

PS. JB tend to have stock on hand in my experience....

interesting to know. i'm kinda paranoid towards dead/lit pixels in LCD and i insisited with defect-free manufacturers when buying lcd monitors (samsung, philips etc), although i almost never really notice the single permanent lit pixel on my notebook.

price wise, 42" G10 is selling around NZ$1300 with tax in some oveseas regions and price keeps falling. my sony crt is not giving up yet, and i usually don't spend more than 2 hours a day with tv.

on the power consumption, you probably right, the neopdp is capable of higher contrast and probabaly higher brightness and theoretical max power consumption could be higher than non-neopdp. from what i've read many ppl would turn brightness down and won't see much of a difference between S10 and G10 in home setup.

Actually when I said 2 dead pixels I think technically they are 2 dead sub-pixels - I may be wrong but I think a pixel is a cluster of red/green/blue and a sub-pixel is just one of the three. If I am more than about 1/2 a metre away I cant see them and they only show when that part of the screen is the primary colour of the dead sub pixel. My wife just swears she cant see them at all!

If you arent in a particular hurry the prices have been trending down over the last couple of years - I suppose they will sink to a level where they dont drop any more, but unless our $ takes a dive you probably dont need to rush to purchase.
