Edge lit LED still has a few advantages - quicker startup, no problems running when freezing cold (since NZers are too cheap to heat their drafty stick houses) and no colour shift as the tubes age that can be impossible to counteract with controls. Oh, and they are thinner which might matter if your house is only 2 meters wide or something daft like that.
Is that worth the premium that they have over CCFL backlit panels? No. IMO. Save the money on it, and when the backlights do go, something better will be cheaper than what you saved.
Another question would be is it worth waiting for boxing day / january sales? It seems as though most of the sales are arbitrary as they will sell it for the cheapest price anytime with a bit of haggling.
according to the salesmen, the margins on those TVs are small and the prices are heavily discounted in most sales. But I don't like to believe everything that salesmen say
from memory NLG do 20% most major brands for their boxing day sales, seems to be the same each year. But you could get just as good'er price by price matching etc
The question is which price they take the 20% discount off. The G10 at JB Hi Fi is currently $2799 yet the actual list price is $3799 therefore it is already more than 20% discounted off the original price. So for boxing day they will say 20% and the price will go up to $3000ish. Or perhaps they will further discount it on boxing day. Can anyone confirm the lowest price they have seen the 50" G10 at sale or no sale. I am inclined to think the $2600 i was offered it for is a great price irrespective of sales.
Picture is great (and yes, the internet connectivity including YouTube was a bonus - even although it makes a lot more sense for me to use my PS3 rather than accessing the function from the TV itself).
Other functionality that's a little bit different is the built-in content. eg. Menus/Recipes Kids books/cartoons Screen savers with background music
But the big bonus up until Dec 24 is the bonus 22" TV 8-). It's a great TV with Freeview (but I'm guessing that's "normal" these days). It was nice to be able to replace both our main TV plus our 12 year old TV in our bedroom!

JB (Wlg) just offered me a 50" G10 for 2550.. couldn't pass that up so on its way :)
The fella said that pany is out of 50" s10's til mid jan so they are getting aggressive with the g10 prices.
Might be a little cheaper after Christmas, who knows, but I figure they just sell to a certain margin and that will drop and rise with whatever the dist sets.
