no offense, but you have too many things doing the same thing.
you need to do this:
1) connect all picture bits direct to tv, in a prioritised order 2) connect the most important sound bits to you 'HOME THEATRE' via OPTICAL
i suggest
PICTURE Freeview HD -> TV (HDMI) - you MUST configure the box to output HDMI Sky standard definition i presume -> TV (COMPONENT) - you MUST configure the sky box to output component. you may need to plug in via RCA first to see any picture, then configure component and
RCA goes blank and switch to component. DVD recorder -> TV component HOME THEATRE -> TV (HDMI)
SOUND DVD recorder to HOME THEATRE (optical) - you MUST configure the dvd recorder to output sound to home theatre via optical the rest send sound to tv or HT as you please - but you must tell the device where to send it to.
Apologies, I do not have sky. Got the Freeview to replace it. I will give the rest a go as per what you have said. I had not checked to see if the units were configured to how you suggest so will do that. Thanks
If the home theatre system has a dvd player then you'll be using this to watch dvd's.
It if has an optical in or a dig coax in then ideally you want to use this input with the freeview box. If the freeview box is a terrestrial/HD version then the only way to get dolby 5.1 out of it is via coax/optical. So you'd want hdmi from freeview to tv PLUS optical or coax to the home theatre system.
The DVD recorder can be connected to the home theatre unit by basic old analogue rca audio plugs as nothin coming from it is going to be that important.
I think you need to work out really what you're trying to do and just simply go about connecting everything to the tv firs and then the home theatre next if possible. Sounds like the home theatre unit has limited inputs so you're probably not going to be able to run everything through it.
Only exception is to take a monitor audio output from the tv (which will only be stereo rca plugs) back to the home theatre unit. That way anything the tv is watching will be output over that connection back to the home theatre unit. Not ideal really though as you won't get 5.1 over this type of connection.

You said you have the optical cable going from your DVD recorder to your HT. You don't need this. If you want to watch a DVD in surround sound, put it in the HT's DVD player. Use that optical cable to connect the Freeview Box to the HT - that way you will get digital audio from freeview to your HT.

Ok, managed to get Christmas out of the way and had a little time to try peoples recommendations out. Jaxson, thanks for the suggestions mate but when I have the freeview on through the tv and connected with optical from freeview to HT, then red, white from tv out into HT out (does not have an in, then I get sound through HT on one speaker only (have 4 and subwoofer).
