get sky in to do it. tell them the picture quality is disappointing. and settle nothing less than S-Video, (unless you're like me with TelstraClear, the only connection is RCA :-( boohoo)

The Sky broadcasting is SUX here! I have never seen this kind of bad quality
Sky compressed so many channels in so small frequency band, simply unbelievable!
Typical example of "quantity against quality" type of thinking in business

Before you buy a plasma try it with sky in the store..

Yeah - that is the other problem you go into Bond and Bond or any other mass market store and you will find that all their big screen TV's are fed from a single Sky decoder so you never really get to see how good or bad a picture can be before you purchase.

Forgot to add. I had to get my Sky decoder replaced because there was no audio out the SCART. The SCART connectors on the decoder seem to be very low quality.

I would strongly disagree. If you know what you are looking for Sky looks crap on *any* large screen LCD or Plasma. The problem at the end of the day is Sky heavily compressing their channels to fit on 1 transponder. Sky don't give a toss because 90% of people wouldn't even notice or care and the other 10% of people who do care have no real alternative anyway. The only way they can fix the problem is to get another transponder, something they can't do off their current Optus satellite. As to whether they will do anything about it when the new Optus D2 launches next year is anybody's guess but hopefully they will and start offering some better programming such as Discovery Travel &Adventure (only available on Saturn) and offer a 24/7 Sky News UK feed as well as Sky Australia/NZ.

Jama: Hmmm... my Plasma lights up my room fine - no need for side lamps either. It has 10,000:1 Contrast ratio, 1,500cd/m2 Brightness and HDMI.

Wills1 - you are right the pic quality on Sky is quite aweful, although it has got better recently due to a new algorithm they are using. There are no settings on the decoder with Sky the picture is what it is.

Sounds like the Sanyo one we just won from Telecom.... they are great. Awesome pictire, and basically a complete viewing angle (stand almost totally side on and still see a nice bright picture)

had the same issue. You need a differnt docder. Sky are awarr of this issue and will change it if you tell them it is a SVGA screen. Seems the pace decoders have an issue with SVGA

Hi,

The OP complained of getting colour distortions on his plasma screen when connected to a SKY decoder with a SCART-S-Video cable. He then came back later saying that he thought the problem might be the cable as he was able to get a good picture by going through a different route.

Some new TV and DVD recorders display distorted pictures from their S-Video input because they don't conform to the SCART standard. In the SCART standard all devices such as screens and DVD recorders should terminate (put a 75 Ohm resistance across) their S-Video input. Some new devices do not terminate this input for DC voltages. This may be so that the manufacturer can accept additional DC signalling on the input for wide-screen switching from other devices in their range. The effect of this missing termination is that the chroma (colour) signal is distorted and false widescreen switching can occur. All SKY decoders should require this termination to be present but in reality if it is missing it only affects 4 STBs : the Pace TP2 and TP3 (i.e. the OP's Pace DSR600) and the Motorola 5512UMM and 5516. The solution is either to place a terminating resistor inside the SCART cable or change the decoder for a model which ignores the problem.

This particular problem is not caused by SKY but by the TV manufacturer. SKY do supply their installers with SCART cables modified with an internal resistor.
