Torquenstein: I wish I could get a 50" G10 but lv martin dont even list it! Arg, choosing a TV is so hard.

I havnt actually moved into my house yet, I may have to wait until then to decide which size tv to get.

Go the 50", otherwise you will always think after you buy the 42" - I wonder if I should of gone for the bigger screen.

Went and looked at some more TVs yesterday. HN had a 50" S10 and V10 right next to each other. My god the V10 is smooth as butter with movement compared to the S10.

I can get a V10 for about $3150, is that a good price or do they ever come cheaper? Is it worth getting the V10 over the G10?

Cheapest it has ever been is $2999 at harvey norman in the Boxing day sales, so yes that is a pretty good price, might be able to haggle them down a bit more with some effort.

minimoke: Arguably the new crop of LED back lights perform worse than an CCFL backlight on the LCD's - both of which, argaubly are worse than a plasma.

are you sure on this? (no, i am NOT sure so i'm just curious)

I've always held the believe it's as good as plasma coz the wasnt the samsung LED tv advertised as something ridiculous like 1:1,000,000 dynamic contrast ratio?

Okay, so JB-Hifi had some great sales going on (and everyone else has followed, must have been a supplier discount or something?)

I went to see the mentioned 42" Panasonic plasma, and to be honest, I was dissapointed with the flicker, or what you would consider to be the frames per second on the TV, it was clearly visible compared to some of the higher end LCD's.

I've settled on an LG 32" LCD, contrary to everyones recommendations, mostly on the good reviews I've read regarding the US model, the price point, and the visible performance of the TV in the store compared to others - (http://www.lge.com/nz/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-lcd-tv-32LH50YD.jsp)

Now, I just need to convince my partner that we need the TV!!!

I have a SHARP AQUOS LCD TV and I wouldn't trade this for a PLASMA TV ...First , LCD lifetime is far better than PLASMA TV . So durability , LCD TV offers a wise decision for durability and longer enjoyment.

By the time your plasma dies there would probably be a new technology/model that has replaced it anyway?

What about picture quality? I dont care if it lasts 10 years less, as long as I am satisfied with my purchase in terms of me knowing I bought a TV with a better image.

Manufacturers contrast ratios are a joke, especially dymanic. The figures are exagerrated and twisted just to get that higher number for a selling point. The reason some LCDs can quote such figures is because of blinding backlights to boost the brightness which will raise the contrast ratio despite the often poor black level.
Black level being the most important part of a good picture will be what I continue to look for in a tv as opposed to trusting a spec sheet.

As for lifetime of LCDs vs plasma, they're both 20 years+ by which time you will have surely upgraded your tv.

Finally those LCD expert ratings are averages of quite a few review sites of which the only reputable one is CNET(the rest of them have reviewed only a handful of tvs and their reviews are recitals of spec sheets, nothing more) who consistently give plasmas their top reviews; pioneer kuro, panasonic v10/g10, samsung pnb650...

The main advantage of "Side-lit" LED, to my mind, is they make Plasma and even standard LCD TV's look fat. As far as I know, this also means a lighter weight TV. Are these TV's worth the price premium they currently command? Not in my books. I went with a much more affordable Panny Plasma (50G10) and this TV does it all. Brilliant for gaming, and also for Blu Ray: It handles 24p very well -super smooth.

I for one, couldn't care less how thin a flat panel TV is, how heavy it is, or how much power is uses , I care about the picture - after viewing and researching many, buying out 50" Panasonic Full HD plasma was the best decision we could of made. Brilliant for both gaming and Blu-ray.

Re "LED" TV's - bit of an interesting comment on the Register:
"LED backlighting is all the rage at the moment; it can dramatically improve the contrast ratio of LCD panels, helping them towards the deep blacks seen on plasma displays. But many of the sets available at the moment, including the LG we recently reviewed, use LEDs that aren’t individually addressable – so it’s still really all or nothing"
