I haven't upgraded to an HDMI receiver yet. The Philips BDP3000 doesn't decode DTS-HD MA. Do you know if it can still extract the DTS 5.1 Core from the DTS-HD MA and bitstream 5.1 over digital coax? Or would every DTS-HD also contain a DTS core track? Thanks in advance.

joker97: ps3 doesnt play sacd

It does if you've got the right version. For a clear table outlining which early models do and which later ones don't play SACD, see the PS3 SACD FAQ.

smarsden:
1)  I've narrowed the blu-ray player down to the following options - any thoughts/comments etc on any of them?  Any others to consider?:

         e) Oppo BDP-80

2)  My current DVD player is region-free, something which at the time I bought it I was advised all players in NZ are modified to be, and as I understand things is still the case, yes?  Are all of the above blu-ray players therefore region free too on both blu-ray and DVD discs, or only on DVDs?  (The Oppo is the only one that makes specific reference to being completely region free on the RapalloAV website).

3)  If the players are not region-free, do I really need to be concerned about it?  Has anyone used any region A or C blu-rays on any of the above players other than the Oppo?

4)  The Oppo is significantly more expensive than the others (especially compared to the Panasonic DMP-BD60, which JB Hi-Fi currently have for only $299!) - is it really that much better?  They state on their website also, that the BDP-80 is not recommended for home theatres with large screens - something which I find rather surprising, and suggests it's not suitable for the projector.  If the picture quality is that much better than the others, surely this implies that none of the others are suitable for projector use either (seems odd to me, as the projector does a great job of scaling the current DVD feed, in my opinion).

I

Most BD players will produce the same end result, improvents on some come from load times, what discs they play, ease of use, funtions, build, region free/zone free etc etc...

The Oppo BDP-80 is a highly rated BD player, but if you want the best, the BDP-83 is all its cracked up to be!

We still get customers who buy discs from overseas not knowing they wont play on their NZ BD player, when you have a zone free Blu-ray player life gets much easier!

The Oppo BDP-80 will still give you a super image on TV's 50" and under, if your display is larger than that, or a projector, the BDP-83 would be the one to go for, especially if you have a large library of DVD's

Thanks 70mm.

Following that AVSForum link, I then found an updated version of the load times at a fully hosted site: http://winstonsreviews.com/?page_id=56

I've no doubt that the Oppo BDP-80 is a great player, and the BDP-83 an even more stunning all-round machine, but I can't justify the cost of either - especially the latter!

From the Winstons Reviews site above, it shows in terms of speed tests, that the Panasonic DMP-BD60 is quicker than a PS3 Slim, and for the price that one seems to be available for at the moment - $299 at JB HiFi - that one's currently got my top picking.

The BD-60 is a great price at present since its run ut stock. The new models will be out soon and more than the current offer!

For those that are interested, I got the Panasonic DMP-BD60 at the end of last week, and after doing all the required cabling changes to get the HDMI feed to the projector (along with installing the matrix switch), we watched our first blu-ray movie on Sunday, which was 2012.

One word - WOW!

I previously thought the picture from our old DVD player was extremely good (although that was probably due to the projector doing a good job at scaling it), but from the blu-ray the picture quality was simply stunning.  The DTS-HD audio seemed to have more presence to it than the audio from DVD's.

Can't wait to watch something else!!!  :-)

I hope it wasn't 2012 - Doomsday !!! One of the most appalling pieces of DVD garbage out there. I watched it, hoping that it may get better. It didn't .. 2 hours of my life lost ... do not ever, ever watch this movie, even to see how bad a movie can be !!  What they say on IMDB is true !

No, wasn't that, it was the blockbuster from last year, as you probably expected me to say!

I've just checked IMDB for the Doomsday one, and I see the rating it gets!  Much to my surprise it gets a lower rating than "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus", which we started watching at some point last year and gave up on it was so bad, and I would have given a big 0/10, so for Doomsday to be worse than that is impressive!!
