jofizz: Perhaps something like this could be happening? (I don't know whether to believe the story or not).

Energy saving light bulbs can change TV channels

Cheers,
Joseph.

I believe the "May cause interference" ... but I'm not convinced that on it's own the bulb emits the correct sequence of infra-red pulses to inform the TV to turn on/off, change the channel.

Hey tornado I was able to get into work for a few minutes yesterday.  I swapped around a few HDMI cables and inputs.
The original setup goes through two splitters and probably involves at least 3 or 4 seperate cables, this was giving a blank screen every couple of minutes or so.
I switched over to a tv going through the same splitter arrangement that was working fine and the problem got far worse with a blank screen every 2 seconds or so making it definitely unwatchable.
I then connected it straight to our philips bluray player with a 5m hdmi cable and did not notice any flicker for a few minutes at which point I had to leave.

What is your exact setup, including length of the cable as this can have an effect
Have a quick read of this wikipedia article on hdmi cables http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Cables
It's true a "better" hdmi cable won't give you a better quality picture but some can handle long lengths better than others.

FYI The cables I was using were DSE titanium range which never seem to give me any problems apart from this case in terms of sending a signal though they aren't the most robust connector.
I'll let you know if I find out anything more on saturday.

Philips Blu Ray player? Dick Smith employee, interesting.

I have yet to find a splitter I 100% trust, make sure all the HDMI sinc features on the tv's & Blu Ray are turned off ie Bravia link, Viera link etc.

Whats interesting lol?

Good to know you've fixed the problem. I had a feeling it was something to do with the cable but it was odd that it was just that tv for both of us.

My set-up experiences a similar occurance although very irregularly. Ironically it has something to do with the subwoofer amp kicking in and out. I switched the sub so that power is always on and problem disappeared. the weird thing is it only did it sometimes not everytime the sub turned itself on or off.

Hahaha I'm sure I've mentioned it a few times. I don't mind people knowing, it helps explain why I appear to be biased to some brands.

tornado: Hi i have brought a new hdmi cable dse titanium 1.5m and no problems so far

@ Tornado - Just wondering if you've had any repeat of the dropout problem with your new cable or not? I'm experiencing a similar problem between my receiver and projector using the same cables you did originally (1 at each end of a HDMI/Cat6 wallplate), and am thinking it's the cables at each end (rather than the Cat6 in the middle). I'd be interested to know if the problem's returned for you.

Yeah I juggled a few more cables and I believe it's fine at the moment unless someones mucked around with it since.
