cgrew: Yes that is correct magu - best to wait for when manufacturers start bringing out polarized 3D TVs.

Less expensive & more user friendly

From my blog when I visited Panasonic:

Will there ever be 3D without needing the glasses and why?

Unsure. There are several forms of auto stereoscopic screens. Unfortunately the current technology has several major issues e.g. eye strain, severely limited viewing angle and poor resolution to name a few. If they manage to overcome these then perhaps but it doesn't seem likely any time soon.

Zippity: Actually there is a 3D screen that you can watch without the need of having to wear special glasses.

The only drawback is that it costs tens of thousands of dollars and it is only avaliable in China at this stage Frown

Run a Wiki on 3D

3D is nothing short of fantastic. Give it a few more year to be developed fully.
In this morning's Turkish F1 GP, Massa's Ferrari had one of those new fandangled 3D cameras attached to it  Laughing

Not true, these guys have been in the 3D game for quite a few years:

NZ company, located in Panmure. They use a dual layer screen which looks pretty cool but is limited in a number of ways (the first being cost obviously!). AFAIK they haven't yet got anything in the consumer market.

Oh and avoid looking at any of the 3D demo setups in Noel Leemings etc, if you are anything like me you'll go from thinking this 3D thing is all a bit of a gimmick to 'hmmm, how can I justify that to the wife...' Laughing

(Drool) Damn that makes my 1080P LCD look like the first mono speakered bubble CRT TV.

Dunnersfella: F1 in 3D would be mind bending! Driver cam as someone hits a wall would scare the bejeebus out of folk!

Well considering we can't even get F1 in HD, i wouldn't hold out for 3D any time in the next 20 years.

Yeah they stopped shipping the 42inch model and stopped further research.. but they still have some stuff listed on their site... a real shame as it was a great TV...

Just another data point. When I was CES in Vegas this year 3D obviously was all the rage. Most required you wear glasses but TCL had a demo of 3D without glasses and given the constraints of the venue (tons of people milling around not ideal location etc.) the image was pretty realistic. They showed a spinning wheel of a gambling machine which appeared to be spinning in space.

So the technology is there - I just have no idea how cheap or easy to produce it is.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

I'd say it'd be under 10.
But hey, it's all crystal ball gazing eh. Wink
