the thing is your hdmi port is not detecting the connection (is that correct) - so we need to find the way to find out why/where the problem lies - the audio bars are not important at the moment ... why dont you ask the supplier/get another one to try?

1. Are you using HDMI out on the video card, or are you using DVI -> HDMI cable/adapter?

2. Have you tried a 2nd HDMI cable, one of the pins maybe a dud.

Have you still got the VGA cable plugged in at the same time?
On my ATI 5XXX card the HDMI won't work if there is any other connections plugged in as well. It will default to VGA or DVI if they are plugged in. On mine I had to remove the vga connection and have connected only via HDMI from boot to get HDMI working. Even now if I plug in a VGA cable the HDMI disables automatically.

this i have not tried. i always have both connected and somehow only the one is connected via vga works. i was under the impression that the card will output the picture on both monitors at the same time.

i will give it a go tonight.

Perhaps the HDMI socket on the card is faulty. Try a DVI to HDMI adapter/cable.

I just remembered - when I installed my card I had to cut some of the bracket of the case near the HDMI plug as it wouldn't allow the HDMI cable to push all the way in. It held it out about 1mm which was enough to prevent the card recognising that anything was plugged in to that socket.

Almost guarantee that is the problem!

Does your Catalyst Control Center correctly identify the TV? (i.e. resolution etc).

my suspiscion is because the vista-crapper wouldn't allow me to install the drivers, not even updating itself, hence it couldn't do anything
