380 are very similar to the 555. great base and nice high and mid range. I use them for all sorts of music.

But the 380 are at the same price level as the 595 and the 280 are at the same price level as the 555.  Does this mean I need to spend ~$100 more on the closed back versions to get the same quality sound as the open back version?

no, I'm only comparing to my 555s - I dont have the 280's so cant compare sorry. From the reviews I read when I brought the 380's, the 280-s are very highly regarded can's - the 380's are a cross between the 280 and the 555 - i.e. they have some of the 555 tech included like E.A.R

If you havent owned a midrange pair of Senn's before go with the 280 - you will love them, the only reason I went with the more $$$ 380's is that I have the 650s at home so only the highend can come close for me now.

I modded my 555's too. I hear if you cut out the metal also it further improves sound quality.
