This is the WAP I have. It's connected via GB switch to my PC downstairs.

Not dual band, and what is the client device you are connecting to the accesspoint with?

How much difference would a dual band router make? Can you recommend one that isn't stupidly expensive?

Unfortunately they are all stupidly expensive because there isnt the demand for them outside the corporate world yet, and the 5GHz has massive problems getting thru a house, whereas it seems that 2.4 suffices for most people.

networkn: Entirely defeats the purpose to manually transfer files to usb.

I was meaning do this (play the mkv off a usb flash thumb stick) as a one off test to prove/isolate that the wireless networking is the problem (rather than the WDTV itself)... rather than as a permanent solution.

Also I would plug the Wireless N adapter into a laptop and do a few file transfers and lan speed tests to get a better idea of what the real world throughput is from your storage through the wireless ap over the air to your laptop (with the adapter in it).

The 8500ish Kbps bit rate of the mkv isn't that extreme only ~8Mbit/s or 1 MByte/s, tbh that shouldn't be a problem but you might have other environmental factors at play.

Hi There!

I played the same file from my laptop and there were 2 x < 1 second pauses). If I copy the file to a stick or run a cable it's fine on the device. It's definitely a wireless problem!! I can't believe that N over the space of 4 meters can't cope with this!!! I feel so annoyed. I if I upgrade the wap what are the chances the problem will be sorted?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Deev8: If you were prepared to abandon wireless, what would almost certainly work is a pair of 200Mbps Powerline or Homeplug adapters.

networkn: We tried that, we have RCD's etc so they don't work.

The most common reason for Homeplug / Powerline adapters not working is if they are plugged into surge protected multi-way adapters. RCDs built into individual power outlets or circuits serving part / all of a home generally aren't a problem for them.

However if you have tried them and they don't work that's very unfortunate because they are a great solution for most people.

Hmm try installing http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider on the laptop and use it + the wireless adapter and scope out what's going.
